Lewis Hamilton makes "if we all had the same car" claim about F1 rival Max Verstappen

quote:

Mercedes have had no reliability issues, but have struggled to match the performance of their Red Bull and Ferrari rivals. Hamilton feels he could give Verstappen a run for his money again this year, if he had the same machinery as the Dutchman.

"I mean the car does limit us," he told reporters at Zandvoort. "I think for anyone that's further back in the order they are limited by the machinery they have. If we all had the same car, no matter which one it was, you would see a better reflection of each driver, but that's obviously not the case.

He's not wrong. That's a great thing about F1. It's not just the drivers. It's also an engineering battle.

I feel so bad that the guy with 7 championships doesn’t have the fastest car.

I guess I see his "It's the car not me", BUT how do you explain Ichabods 7 podiums to his 6 and leading him by 30 pts in DWC standing. Not same car?

No. It wasn't for the first part of the season. Merc was clear they were running different cars.

George is a great driver, but once they were given the same setup Lewis showed his experience.

If things are to be believed, they were not the same car. Word on the street is Hamilton volunteered to be the guinea pig and have his car experimented on to see what worked and what didn't work. Russell has also gotten the benefit of some luck.

Got ya! Of all the media coverage and engendered drama of DtS, would we all agree that Lewis is usually the first to direct success on the track to the driver vs the car?

But here lack of performance is car not driver.

That's the fun of F1 it will always be chicken or the egg

If they had been in the same cars for the past decade ol' Ham wouldn't have 7 WDC's.

Agree. How can anyone be a Lewis fan at this point.

Love this season.

I don't think he is asking for equal cars. Just simply stating what everyone knows. And the Mirror is trying to generate clicks by picking and choosing how they present it.

He complimented the whole RBR team this weekend and said that Newey and team built a great car that is at the front. Even saying that he owed Newey when it came to his own championship winning cars.

A journalist turned around and asked Max what he thought of Hamilton saying it was the car and not the driver as to why he was doing so good this year.

I really love this driver or car argument, but this discussion is surrounded around top of field.

I would argue that Norris and Max are the best drivers currently in F1 hands down!

I believe they truly pull every bit of performance possible out of the car he is given.

Arguments?

Seems like Fernando Alsonso has over performed this year. Dude is a hot head and burns down every team he leaves…but still a top driver.

To be fair Ichabod did get incredibly lucky with safety cars earlier in the year to land some of those podiums.

Not taking anything away from him because he went deep in races gaining track position gambling on that.

Just pointing out it hasn’t been a Lewis is losing it move over old man year.

It looks like it already got scooped up, but it was a 3 bedroom house in Del Valle for about $250 a night.

I really struggled with that thought of including him with Norris and Max but arguably Ocon is above him in DWC standings.

I also am on the fence if he really gets all he can out of the car or does he just portray himself that way?!?!

I actually like the guy but no one can say he is not an egomaniac.

Everything Lewis said is obviously true but he should probably have a bit more self awareness to know that he's probably not the best messenger to say that given how many seasons he had the fastest car.

I've thought for a bit now that Ocon is the most underrated dude in F1 right now.
