Spa is the ultimate F1 circuit and a classic. This is the highlight of the race calendar IMO.

Yeah so let's definitely stop going there. I mean we definitely need more formula e parking lot circuits instead

I’m anticipating a snooze fest.

If latifi can keep running until 10 to go anything can happen

So grid penalties are basically 5 spots per unit change, correct?
So let's say you finish P10 in Quali, you make 3 changes, do you just go to last on the grid and that's that, or do you still have 5 more spots of penalties to carry over to the next race?

They don't carryover. The rule was changed a couple years ago to prevent someone from "installing" and then shelving new components to save them for later races without incurring additional penalties but I'm not exactly sure how that works now. But if you get penalized all the way to the back you might as well replace everything because I don't think it carries over to additional races.
But you can't install several new engines and shelve them for later. You could do that in the past

Back when Red Bull/McHonda were racking up 35 place penalties.
Penalties are given in the following manner:
The first time an additional element is used, the driver gets a 10-place grid penalty
The next time an additional element is used, the driver gets a five-place grid penalty
If a driver incurs a penalty exceeding 15 grid places, they will be required to start the race at the back
short article on the rules now (formula1.com)
Per the article Jenson Button holds the record for a 70 place grid penalty.

I'm about halfway through a season and like 4 or 5 of my components it's rather obvious will need an upgrade, so I just figured it would be easier to do it in 1 race only and start at the back as opposed to 4 or 5 separate grid penalties.
Looks like I may have made the right choice.

There is so much strategy in this.
For instance Alonso stalled on the start and ended up starting from the back. So he just took a new engine.
So you have to weigh if it is worth it to build your stable if you qualify bad or get some sort of other grid penalty. Merc played it perfectly last year with engine penalties, knew their meth machine engine could go balls out for two races so they did just that to get on par with RBR.

LeClerc could have just bolted in his third PU in Canada with a 4th turbo and taken a 10 spot grid penalty. Going from memory here, but should be close.
Instead, they not only did that, but then also ran a 4th PU with all new parts iirc which got all those parts into his pool with only a further 10 spot penalty.
So basically, he got a new engine, two turbos, new MGU-K, and new MGU-H for starting at the back of the grid. I think there may have been a control electronics as well.
The third ICE was within the allowed number of the year. Everything else was above and beyond. Since they had to take ten spots for the fourth turbo, they decided to go all in to get more fresh parts in the pool versus taking penalties for each as they needed them down the road.

I'm glad he takes the time to post on TD.
ETA: Edited to add original post I was responding to. It's so much easier.

Midfield is insanely tight in FP3.
Only about 7 tenths from 5th, Perez, to 16th, KMag.
Kmag starting from the back as he's taking all the same parts as Sainz.

Quali is coming on and I realized my little girl is conditioned to the F1 music. She ran and jumped on the couch with me to watch race cars.
