Why would a driver not just drive straight at turns 1/2 then?

The risk of gravel is higher, also the consequence is much higher.
I like the idea of gravel, but don't have a problem with the drivers getting a lap time deleted for pushing the edge versus ending their race or getting hurt.

But a thin white line they miss by an inch or two is bullshite. And if you’re going to hold them accountable in Quali then every single time in a race should get a warning and quick black/white flags.

Lots of interesting driver and team finishes in qualifying. Going to be interesting tomorrow. Can Ferrari not blow up tomorrow? Leclerc going to be pushing it from pole. Sainz with a way to go to catch up going to be pushing it.

5 second penalty is detrimental. I guess we could put a bunch of sausage kerbs and launch the cars, that sounds fun. Or maybe landmines.
It's the best this rule has been, the drivers push the edge and have a penalty for going over. When they let them go to the edge of the kerbs they had deleted times for that. When they didn't police corners for limits the drivers found advantages and rules changed mid-race.
Black/white. On/off.
