re: 100 mph fastball is the same as old school 93 mph.

Because Skenes was throwing 100mph. The old vs new gun is more about understanding that the older guys threw a little harder if they’d have had the newer tech clocking them. It doesn’t take away from the new guys.
It certainly does. Clocking a pitch at or closer to the release point is certainly going to record a higher speed than a pitch that has already traveled 50 - 54 feet.

I thought this was a post on the poli board for a second. OP can't read

Radars have definitely changed. Bob Gibson, JR Richard and Nolan all threw with the best of them today.
We have no way of actually knowing that.
We know where the ball was timed vs where it is timed. There is a drop in speed and that is calculable so we have a good idea that the 100 MPH pitch now is slower than a 100 MPH pitch when those guys threw. But still a darn good pitch.
Does all that mean they would be as good as any pitcher now? Who knows but I'd say Bob Gibson and Nolan Ryan would have been a stud pitcher in any era, probably JR Richard as well.

The rest is math to arrive at 108 plus MPH.

Nolan Ryan threw 100.9 in the 9th inning in August 1974 that would be over 108 mph today.

This board has some weird obsession with Nolan Ryan. He was a good pitcher but y'all have turned him into some sort of Paul Bunyan caricature that threw 10 mph faster than anyone and couldn't be hit. He's really good but not a top 10 or even top 15 pitcher of all time. He was a really good pitcher who accumulated lots of Ks by playing almost three decades. Is it because he's from Texas? Or because he's blue collar that makes people try to make him something he wasn't?
His 162 average season is 14-13 with a 3.19 era with a walk rate of 4.67 batters per 9 innings.

Nolan Ryan also had tiny hands.
I thought that was interesting.

I am a lot closer to Professional baseball than 99% on this board. Nolan Ryan threw a lot harder and faster than anybody EVER! Remember, 1 in 10,000 college baseball boys make it to the bigs!! That is how BIG the difference is between College and Professional baseball.
Nolan was also a tad wild and he did not need a slider. His 12 - 6 curveball was phenomenal.
Can you even imagine a fastball getting to you 10% quicker than anyone throws today? No you can not.
Most of you, almost all of you, have not been on the field or even in the stands to witness the difference.
Hank Aaron, Pete Rose, Reggie Jackson, etc., will definitely tell you. Even current PH'd's of math can provide the evidence for knuckleheads!!

Ray gun at the plate, Juggs at release.

Hitters of the day said the 2nd best pitch in the league after Ryan's fastball was Ryan's curve
Posted on 7/16/23 at 9:47 am to Timeoday
Ryan must have a ton of Cy Young awards for being so dominate his long career.

Exactly. It was hard to pick up his fastball when watching on TV. But that curve, with his wildness, started at the head and went to the ankles quickly!!
Frigger was throwing no-hitters in his 40's!!

Looking at a list of the top 20 pitchers of all time and Nolan Ryan isn't on that list.
