While the Harvard degree is more valuable than other history degrees, it is not more valuable than an engineering undergrad. The median Harvard BA in history earns a little more than $50k. The worst engineering discipline nationally starts out with a median of $62k.

What makes a Harvard degree valuable is the connections you would potentially make while there. Gotta have that in mind early though if you're majoring in a useless field.

Consider working in GIS (creating maps). I know a guy who does GIS work for a firm, and a big portion of his work last year was researching land parcel ownership just as you mentioned that you liked doing.

I also know a guy working in GIS that helps create findings maps for Archaeologists as part of his job description.

I'd recommend getting your feet wet/learning ArcPro. After that, there are many areas that you could work in, including sports data analytics. Good luck to you

Harvard has shiny prestige for a lay person, University of Chicago is right on par with it in most disciplines and the average person wouldn’t know it from UIC.

Become a high school history teacher? I’m a history teacher and I found that it’s probably the best way to have a career in the field. Federal jobs with the Park Service are hard to come by, local history sites don’t pay well, and becoming a college professor takes a lot of time and money.

We don’t have standardized testing for history in PA, so the admin could care less about what we do, and it’s awesome. I can spend as much time as I want on a given subject and teach how I want.

If interested in AML take a look at all the online sports wagering providers. Or maybe even the risk trading department.

I'm not sure where you're getting this from.

But trust me, the median Harvard BA in History can make a lot more than $50k a year if they wanted to.

Private equity firms and hedgefunds recruit on campus and they recruit from all subject backgrounds with pay regularly above $100k starting salaries.

I have friends who went to Harvard and the kind of firms that recruit there are firms that most of us can only dream about.

Thank you for the recommendation. This is actually something I have researched a bit. I will look more into this field.

Are you talking about compliance for a sports book? Cause if so that is a great idea that I haven’t thought of. I love to sports bet too so it’s perfect

I am looking now and already see some interesting jobs. I have never thought of the parallel between banks and sports books in this regard but there seem to be lots of jobs related to compliance / KYC / etc. if I don’t like it the experience would certainly help me advance in AML or other compliance related fields. Definitely something to think about. Thanks again for this comment. I have never thought of this amazingly enough

Yes compliance is huge for sports books / casino operations. My SO is chief compliance officer for one. has team of 90-ish people. there's way more to it than one would think. if you find a specific roll of interest and have a few questions I may be able to get some answers / advice.

Anti money laundering is basically working for a bank and going through transactions and trying to find any suspicious activity.

Be careful. In practice, almost all AML references are related to things like why a customer SSN check shows his name as John, but he listed Jocko on his application. Then you hit the transaction as requiring additional photo ID, or that the customer visit a branch in person to open an account. Not exciting at all.

SARs (suspicious activity reports) get generated for any transaction of $10k or more. They always seemed to be just creating paperwork, to be used if needed by Federal law enforcement agencies at a later date, not to be investigated by the bank themselves.

One national bank I worked at had fewer than 30 AML/KYC (IIRC) employees out of 10k+ employees in HQ. And those 30 were split between two shifts.

Honestly, I just listen to a crap ton of history podcasts while I'm doing what makes me actual money. I nearly went to get a MA in Military History, but then realized it wasn't going to make me any money.
