Where do you want to live during your retirement?

Beach, mountains, hometown, a couple of condos, RV?

The 401k thread got me thinking. I have always wanted a summer condo in Park City and a condo in the Ala/FL gulf area for fall, winter, spring.

We'll move to our beach place fulltime, at least to start.

My best friend growing up married a girl from one of the smaller Hawaiian islands that's pretty much "locals only". He's stated that they'll likely move back there at some point so I would not mind trying to finagle a small little parcel of land to build a house on near them. Or worst case convince them to build a guest home that I can "temporarily" stay in

We aren't sure where, but it will be a place that doesn't deal with the Hs (heat, humidity, hurricanes) this time of year.

For long term retirement, I’d prefer a small city with decent public transit and healthcare. I’ve watched so many older friends retired in rural and suburban areas struggle with isolation as they age. If health issues render you unable to drive, you’re automatically dependent on others for every little thing....unless you live in a place with enough population density to support Uber, public transit, or taxi service.

My In-laws will be moving down there in a few years. Once my FiL retires from his Financial Advisor business.

They have purchased a small coffee farm that makes enough, at the current prices, to pay the mortgage after paying the labor.

One of the downsides is that, while he has his Captains license im Florida (and takes the occasional charter out for the weekend), he can't do that in CR. Something about that the government doesn't want to remove that income from local businesses. If not for this I believe they'd already be down there because it is his favorite thing to do.

I may consider retirement as an ex-Pat. Portugal is on the shortlist.

This is where my wife and I are wanting to go. However, I'm not holding my breath if grandkids are in the picture.

It checks a lot of boxes...beautiful country and beaches, great climate year around, very cheap, safe, developed, decent sized cities with access to whatever you need...plus, access to the rest of Europe.

I love how everyone is laid back, and no one is in a hurry.

Similar, but in the Charleston area. Sig/Avi pics are usually from there.

We love it. Beautiful. Laid back. 20-25mins from Charleston.

Outer banks are very nice. Great getaways. Mostly remote from metro areas though, so in terms of a more permanent residence, I'd not be as high on them.

Interesting. Price of real estate there is quite high.
