My wife is in the marketing field and has close to 5 years experience. Her income is still below $40K a year. She has had great reviews and a few promotions since she hired in out of college. Is that about right for the marketing field or is she getting screwed? It just seems extremely low to me. I saw an article about chick fil a moving there minimum to $17 an hour. That’s damn near what she makes with a college education.

Not sure. My niece just graduated and got a marketing job in Atlanta starting out at $50k. A lot probably depends on the area you live.

This is highly dependent on where you live.

Wait, she's in marketing and she can't figure out if her salary is above or below the median for her industry and area? Hmm......

Separate issue: if she likes the work & is happy with the salary, what's the problem? IOW, how would you feel if she came home and told you that you're not making enough money & need to start pulling your weight?

I recently found out what someone I know makes working for a restaurant. Mainly working social media/yelp and working promotions and stuff and I was quite shocked at the figure. Much much much higher than 40k.

It depends on what you do within the marketing department.

Digital marketing, marketing automation, marketing analytics all pay well.

Pretty much loops back to being paid more for tech skills I think.

Well they are married. We don’t know how she feels but his opinion counts. Surely they have long term financial goals and plans together.

It would depend on whether that was a valid criticism.

I don’t think OP is out of line here. The majority of people who get a college degree and go to work should be able to hit $40k after 5 years. I would think this should include the marketing profession.

That’s starting out just under $33k and getting 4% yearly raises for 5 years. That’s not asking a ton.

Glassdoor.com is a pretty good start to see market salaries. I find it underestimates professional salaries though somewhat.

If a manager at McDonald's makes 50%+ more than your wife's role, maybe it's time to start looking elsewhere to get your true worth.

This is 100% dependent on what she does. I do marketing. I know people who make $35k and I know people that make $300k.

$40k sounds really low unless she is just doing small time events.

As said it really depends on the company and location, my wife is in marketing. Many in marketing are their companies only employee in that field, so the pay is dependent on the size of the company. If she works for a marketing firm that's a little different.

Really depends on what role she holds at what company and where. What type of marketing?

Feel free to message me, happy to shed some light.

Agencies pay shite even in large markets. They start around $23k in some positions and don’t pay out until reaching Director level.

Associate Brand Managers with MBA make between $95-110k out of school.

Not to totally disagree, but I literally can't imagine someone at my agency making that little, even as a starting employee. And we're in Baton Rouge.

Yes, they do. F500 ABMs start at $110k at top CPG firms. P&G, J&J caliber.

The Richard's Group in Dallas was paying around that as starting salary about five years ago. I doubt it has moved much... Maybe the $30K mark.

Agreed. My old company was paying in this range as well. Kimberly Clark and similar. The MBA school of choice had a big impact on where you fell in the range.

There are a number of things that pay $110k “out of school”.

The amount of positions and amount of people who attained enough student debt to be able to qualify for them via going to the right schools is so low that to act as if either the position or the “talent base,” eligible for them is so small that any description other than, “anecdotal,” is humorous.

Seriously guys...sometimes y’all need to look down on the perch and understand there’s an Everyman contingent on Money Talk also.

Sounds like The Richard's Group might be a crappy place to work that doesn't want to keep their best talent.

Most of the small agencies I know in Baton Rouge are going to start around 30k, and quickly move north of that.
