Based on what I've read here, there are no great options for MKT 701. For that reason, I saved it for the last class of the program. I figured that I'd have sufficient motivation to get through whatever is thrown at me at that point! I'm taking it with A. Darrat. Does anyone recall the name of the former textbook for this course? I wonder if getting a jump start on reading would help...

What do you think about taking Finance 701 with Vines ? Is there a better choice over him ?

Vines is the best instructor for FIN 701. Definitely take the course with him.

James also teaches MKT, but the feedback from her class appears to be even worse than the Darrats'.

I took it with James. To say the workload is intense is an understatement. Weekly reading, weekly exam. Most weeks there will be a “discussion forum post” which is really a full blown research term paper in disguise. Then there is “The Project,” a two part monster of an assignment that spans Weeks 4-7. Weeks 4-7 are a test of will to see how much you really want that MBA, since you will be doing reading, tests, research, and writing 2-3 papers simultaneously. Putting in 30+ hours a week during that time period for that course alone is not uncommon during that period.

With that said, much like Meeks, James is up there with the best instructors in the program. The content is useful and can be genuinely applied to modern business. James is super interactive and seems to genuinely care about her students’ success. Just be prepared to put in work well above what is expected in other courses (outside of Meeks, anyhow).

Dr. James' MKT701 course was one of the better courses in terms of actual useful content. Not only that, but she is engaged in the course and was amazingly responsive.

The project "monster" is the only downside with this course. Otherwise it's really not a hard course at all. Even the project isn't particularly difficult. It's just immense.

I think I learned more applicable material from MKT701 than almost any other course except perhaps MADM751 (entrepreneurship). This was one of the best courses in the program in terms of real world useful material, but you'll probably hate it for a few weeks when in the midst of the project!

SATNIGHTS
With these available:
Acct 701 - Unkown Teacher
ISDS 702 - Ahmet
Madm 760 - Meeks

I would go with Meeks or maybe Ahmet. I havent heard much about him though.

The last week you will need to devote time to writing the final paper but you can get started on that the week before so the load wont be as bad when you are out of town.

Thanks All. I am going to go with ISDS 702. Swapped it out last night.

As for James.... I learned a great deal however I worked my butt off in that class. At a minimum 10-15 hours a week.

Who did you take for:

Fin 701
Fin 710
Fin 720

Do you still have the toolkit available for excel? I dropped Fin 720 last semester.

These are very compatible classes for doubling-up even if you do not have a financial or accounting background. The strategy for this is basically time management for studying. Both are VERY basic and not really graduate level as far as difficulty.

Your primary challenge with Vines for FIN is getting into his summary document and figuring out what the heck he is talking about without a text book. Attend all of his zoom sessions, research the topics on Investopedia, work through the problems, and make sure you have a document with all the relevant info prepared for the test so you do not run out of time. But, it is basic finance and nothing too complicated once you figure Vines out. He is in his own world and you just gotta learn his language and track with his logic. Knowing this going in will help you learn by example rather than by understanding at first. Then, you get to the understanding by practicing the problems. You will have an aha moment and everything will be great kinda like running a race and getting your second wind. Tedious at first and then so easy.

Take Ambrosio for Accounting and you will need to spend the time to learn basic accounting principles such a financial statements, debit and credits, balance sheet elements, the financial equation, ratios, and inventory calculation methods such as LIFO and FIFO. It is basically a Sophomore level business accounting class. The final exam is probably the hardest part but you even get a practice test for that. If you have worked in business, or can read a financial statement, half of the class contains things you should already know anyway. If you are completely new to the financial aspects of business, it is still doable. Just put in the time and you will do fine, especially with all of the extra credit points.

Both classes cover some of the same topics, so they work well together.

Did anyone take Huang for ACCT 701 this fall? I'm looking for any information regarding their course structure, test/assignment styles, etc. I know Ambrosio is generally preferred, but any information on Huang is sincerely appreciated!

Looking for advice.....

Spring semester registered for:

AP1 - ACCT 701 (Ambrosio)
ECON 705 (Shaughnessy)

AP2 - FIN 701 (Choi)
MADM 701 (TBA)

I can move one of the classes to Summer AP1 or I can leave it as is and take Summer AP1 off. What would you do?

Some really great feedback on James, I can't remember the exact moaning, but it must have been regarding the heavy workload.

So it seems James is very similar to Meeks. Engaged, actually teaches, but makes you work your butt off, possibly unnecessarily so.
