So China just barred for-profit tutoring and New Oriental Education & Technology Group is down 58% today on the news. Seeing as how they’re a for-profit tutoring outfit in China, this is understandable. I can’t imagine the company is worth much of anything if this does in fact go through, but I just YOLO’d 500 shares because I hate money that much.

This was a $20 stock in February and has been decimated by the potential for this regulation lately.

Do not consider any of this due diligence, this is not financial advice, and remember this is a company that, as of today, is not allowed to make a profit.

Only because you started it

Chinese stock tickers aren’t real baw. No really. You don’t actually own a piece of the company. It’s illegal for anyone to own a piece of a Chinese company except a Chinese. The government made that law. How do Chinese stock tickers work? Well it’s all fake paper routed through some bank in the caymans

If the politicians weren’t in on the deal and taking white boy money themselves they could easily shut down the “Chinese stock market” and it’d go to 0

Also the concept of accounting doesn’t exist over there

Decent explantion of VIE structure in Chinese Companies

IMO, I think if you are holding any of the big tech companies via VIE (BABA, Tencent) then it will be the status quo.

However, newer tech companies are going to have go through a different set of rules to reach US markets.

Once again this is my opinion, and the Chinese government could decide one day that VIEs are not lawful. Then it will become a long legal battle.

Luckin Coffee is $13 right now and was $15 this week. I made a killing on that stock. Bought 1,900 around $2 and sold all of it between $10 and $15.

You can make short term money in Chinese stocks. I just have doubts about these companies long term, particularly after they clipped Jack Ma. The CCP will not let anyone or any company get too big they are a threat to Xi.

Asians are big into serious after school programs which is a big factor in their academic success. The CCP is big into direct control and dictates what can be taught.

This. I wonder if Elon is going to be able to get Starlink in China and if people could get uncensored content that way. I like Chegg. As they progress, they could may traditional schooling obsolete for those motivated to educate their children. And they could have a global market. So anyone, anywhere could access a quality education for their child. Can see it affecting higher levels of education as well. Knowledge is the key, why should someone have to pay a fortune for what can be found online?

I'm very leery of anything China has control over, even for short term gains.

I’m going to YOLO with you 1000 shares at $2.00

Probably dumb, but, realistically how much lower can it go? (Besides obviously zero)

This thread, from you, is pretty shocking. Honestly.
Didn't think you took these kinds of risks. Ever.

Your Tesla buy from some months back was pretty spicy, but this is ghost pepper.

I can’t bring myself to buy fake companies/stocks. Buying a presumably real company that’s down 80% in 6 months feels more right than buying stock in a non-profit feels wrong.

$2,670 is a reasonable risk/reward trade off, but it’s as aggressive a play as I’d ever really consider. We’re talking about less than 1% of my investment portfolio, for perspective. I don’t think there is a better chance this bombs than makes money, but the upside is good enough to justify the play IMHO.

Until I get my money back.

To put a price target on this situation is asinine. I’m just hoping China peels back on their heavy handed approach and maybe I double up or some BS.
