It doesn’t make me feel poor but it makes me realize although I think I am well off in my head that I’m no where near well off as others are on this board

Excellent reply.

Same here. I'm in the 95th percentile for income individually and my wife just got a decent raise. We both drive Toyota/Lexus vehicles with over 100,000 miles. Meanwhile I see people I know for a fact make less than us buying brand new Tahoes; I'm only half joking when I tell my wife my goal is to make my 4Runner last until my 5 year old is driving

What do you do?
A LOT of people are going to get knocked back to reality over the next 2 years.
Hoping it's not too bad...

It's going to be for quite a few unfortunately I think. I look at the private school where my wife works and kids go to school, and I see a ton of people who seemed to be living right on the edge of living beyond their means. I fear those people are really in for a world of hurt. Also, the amount of people with decent to high paying jobs who still apply for financial aid because they spend so much money is absurd

Not as much as reading the OT.

Chances are if you are on the money talk board on tigerdroppings, you are probably somewhat doing well financially or on the right path to financial success. All the poors would never even attempt to read a post here.

Reading the ZOM thread almost made it a reality.

Comparison is the thief of joy.
There are always people doing better. I'm 98th percentile individual income, 99th percentile household income, and was recently hanging out with 2 friends who are both SDE managers in FAANG. One of them had recently turned down an offer to jump to a different FAANG company for 700K, made me feel a lot worse about my own situation.

A dear friend who I considered a mentor and a very wealthy man told me many times that he was surprised at how many of his own family, supposed friends and former co-workers were hoping he would fall flat on his face when he decided to go out in his own. He said when he started becoming successful, many people kept telling him he was going to fail, it would never last and he was an idiot to leave his old job. Envy comes in many forms.
I think it’s human nature to hope others fail because it justifies our own aversion to risk and fear of failure. I’ve seen this same mechanism on the MTB and OT where others really don’t want to hear a so called “baller” tell their story or give advice. Granted no one likes a braggart and that is understandable.
I had breakfast with a commercial banker this morning who gets loans, lines of credit and accounts for a lot of small and family businesses. He was making the point that his wealthiest customers did not lead flashy lives, drive super expensive cars and live in McMansions and try to impress people. If you have never read “The Millionaire Next Door”, give it a try.

Oh yea. True or not, I feel like a financial flop reading this board.
Really hard to stomach since I feel like I make a lot of money for someone my age, but it makes for good motivation.

Everyone should be required to read 3 books (min):
Richest Man in Babylon
The Millionaire Next Door
The Psychology of Money
…especially those who feel like burning through $250k per year is too easy nowadays.
Might be time to reflect on how others influenced your financial mindset (vs setting the financial outcomes for yourself).

I’m in low 90’s percentile net worth,so I’ve done ok.I could have done better,I’ve spent too much money on hunting and fishing equipment but I don’t regret it now that I’m old.
