I just booked the JW Marriott in Miami for 105000 points for three nights from December 30th until January 2nd. Rooms are going for $500 a night right now so I like the value.
I am expecting a certain football team to be playing there on New Years Eve. If they don't make it I'll just cancel and take the points back.

My in laws live in Denham springs so we stay there. Away games are main thing I would need points for

Nice. Finally putting those Ritz points to work. That is a good card. I think I'll probably get that one for my wife at the beginning of next year.

They've got as good as a shot as anybody these days with the playoffs and a fairly weak Big 10.

A tip for securing award space for big events. Book as soon as you can. You can usually guesstimate when we play certain teams, e.g, Bama first Saturday in Nov.. They'll block out award space at some chains when schedule is released.

Anybody had luck with this?

If you received a Platinum MC prior to February 2015, you should be able to get another Platinum MC even if it has been less than 18 months since you last opened one. See posts: #758, #1314, and #1586. Numerous FTers received a World MC which was then replaced by a World Elite MC around February 2015 and then were able to get another World MC with the Personal Platinum MC links in the Wiki.

I'm not familiar with it, but you could always split the trip up too between that and the Hyatt which I'm fairly certain would be a decent step up.
It shows on website as not available for award stays, but it is, you just have to call it in. 25k/night.

I have 350,000 points for IHG right now...don't have any for Hyatt. Trying to use up some on a nice getaway next year. Looking like Bora Bora is not an option due to my wife's job.

How do you all handle your annual fees on your cards? Threaten to cancel unless they waive the fee or throw some points your way? Actually cancel after a year? Just pay the damn thing?

Gotcha. Anytime you give me all inclusive booze/food I'll make it worth my while. It's not going to be first class, but I'm sure it would make a great 5 day get away, and since it's virtually free, you don't have to feel guilty about eating outside of the hotel periodically.

It's looking like they even started pulling back the "trick". I haven't seen award availability in a while. That fish might have been fried.

I only pay the fee if there is an annual benefit for keeping it sans the Amex SPG and Chase Ink. Even those, I will call and ask to cancel the card and they'll throw a few thousand points at you, but I won't actually cancel those if they call my bluff.
Flyertalk has some good data points for most cards. Just google "Chase Hyatt retention offers flyertalk" or something of the sort.

Thanks for the tips.
Sounds like you had a pretty good trip.
Not long enough, as always, but it was great. Trying to decide where to go next

Random question, but do any of you have experience with requesting spending bonuses on the cards you already have? I had never heard of such a thing until I read this:

10k points for a 5k spend isn't great, but if you are spending that much anyway, or have some big purchases coming up, it's obviously free money.

Delta Amex's have the best spending bonuses IMO for FF's. It's the sole reason I run everything through my Amex and don't spend on any other cards unless Amex isn't accepted by the merchant

Out of all the credit card deals I get, it's my favorite.
Not only do you end up with 110k points, but you're only paying for 1, so those go a pretty long way. I just booked my flights to Cabo yesterday. 23k points total for my wife and I. That's only 5,750 points per person each way to Cabo. That's silly.
On Domestic flights you still have to pay the $5.60 per segment though.

When you say "Southwest two card 2x 50k" does that mean you personally are getting two southwest cards simultaneously? Or is your wife getting a card also, resulting in two southwest cards?

No, you can't combine accounts from two different people to obtain the companion pass.
I got the Southwest Plus personal card and the Southwest Premier Business card @ 50k points each. I had to spend $10k between the two of them to reach 110k points to obtain the companion pass. I applied for them on the same day.

I had signed up for the SW premiere earlier this year for 50k points, and signed up Tuesday for the SW Plus. The spend level is only $2k in 90-days right now for 50K points. I already have two business credit cards with different issuers and did not want that.
I don't know if anyone had posted this recently, but Amex has a Simply Cash business card with no annual fee (ever)that comes with a $500 statement credit with a $5k spend level over 90-days.
