Fun tip of the day for the lurkers:
IHG is selling points with a 100% bonus right now. LINK
Normally I wouldn't really care, but suppose you want to go to Mardi Gras.
You can buy 20k points for $125 and get 20k "free".
The brand new Holiday Inn Express(renovated) on O'Keeefe a block from Poydras is 20k points/night. It's a 2 night minimum, so $125/day for 2 nights.
Reviews on Tripadvisor are good so far and it's only been open for a couple of months.
Rack rate for two nights is over $700.

quote:Yeah, it's bordering on too far for me too, but it's a 4.5 hour train ride, so taking the 8 o clock train and be in Venice by 12:30. Not too bad really.
Fairly spread out. Maybe substitute Florence for Venice?

Teddy, wait until you get closer. Shortly after I took the Bar, I called Cox for some reason or another and could barely form a sentence. Poor girl probably thought I was special needs
Oh I know brother. Took LA 4 years ago. Taking TX because I wanted to snag a client for myself so I couldn't wait for 5 years to motion in.
And come to find out I may have had a chance to take TN instead. Something tells me I would have preferred that one exam wise.
I'm all over the place. Filling in blanks in the lecture notes was harder than anticipated because come to find out, I haven't written with an ink pen much in 4 years

If I had the choice of going to Florence or Venice, it's Florence every day and twice on Sunday.
Also, anyone who hasn't traveled Europe, you should absolutely look into open jaw flight plans. Please, please don't waste time flying into and out of the same airport. Flying into Milan or Florence, traveling by train during your trip, and then flying out of Rome is a far better use of your valuable time.

Just go take the shorter attorney's exam in Georgia. Gives you reciprocity with half the country

Would be glorious but tough to talk HQ into that one. Don't think we have any clients there. Maybe they'll get one. I'm trying to build my own Southeastern fiefdom.

In my head I was going to fly in to Venice, head to Cinque Terre, and fly out of Rome. Probably a ~10 day trip.

Everything I've ever read or heard puts Florence in a different stratosphere to Venice. Florence is now at the top of just about every "list" they make on the subject it seems too.
My wife has been and agrees. She also said Venice smells

Venice is great for what it is. If you have a day or two to spare, it's worth seeing. I just wouldn't advise anyone to spend more than a couple of days there. You will literally run out of things to do. Basically the entire point is to see it. Once you've seen it, you're mostly done. See the sights. Eat out. Buy some seafood at the market in the morning. Call it a trip.
Florence is one of the greatest cities in the world. The architecture is gorgeous, the museums amazing, and the food isn't mediocre and absurdly overpriced like it is in Venice. I could easily spend two weeks in Florence when I got bored of Venice in about 72 hours.
ETA: I would consider bumping your trip to about 14 days. You can do Italy pretty well in that amount of time. You won't see everything, but you'll see quite a bit. Ten days would be tight.

We're doing two nights in Venice but the first day is a throwaway as it's the day we arrive. Then we head to Florence for two full days.
I purchased my Vatican tickets today.

Buy your museum tickets for Florence ahead of time. That alone will save you about a four hour wait in line at the Uffizi.
In Rome, consider hooking up with a tour guide. That will get in front of most of the lines, particularly at the Vatican.

Your link says buying 20k for 20k bonus costs 250$ not 125$

Oh, and make time for Galleria Borghese in Rome. It's not very big, relatively speaking, but it's one of my favorite galleries in the world. Make sure you don't miss Bernini's Apollo and Daphne. It's tit for tat with the David for my favorite sculpture I've ever seen.
And if my memory serves me, it's one of the museums you want to buy/schedule in advance.

You're correct. I mis typed. It comes out to $250 for 40k points putting you at $125/night.

Sounds like you had a pretty good trip.

I usually don't recommend accumulating points by buying them without a purpose or plan.
But, you can definitely see some value out of them with a plan.
e.g., The Holiday Inn Munich City Centre routinely costs around $500USD/night during Oktoberfest and is an easy stumble home if you have too many of da beerz...
Buying points this would only cost you $200/night.

You're probably right no immediate plans since having a 2nd kid at end of year. I'll just keep stockpiling UR. May be moving states next year, so other than a beach trip and LSU games might not have much time for other adventures.
