So, did I do the right thing or screw up?

I have the Delta Amex Gold and mostly fly Delta, but only typically fly 3-4 times per year for work, and once or twice for pleasure. Will fly Delta if the price is decent for personal travel.

Been thinking about upgrading to the Platinum card, saw only offers for 60K bonus miles and 10K MQM miles for new applicants. I called Amex and they gave me that offer since I had not held the Platinum card before, so I was approved and am now waiting on the card to arrive in 2-3 days. Should not have any trouble with the 2K spend in 3 months, and will be making a Delta purchase in 3 months which includes a $100 statement credit. Am planning to cancel the Gold once I receive the platinum. Is that a good plan?

I have no idea how to book a companion travel, but I guess I will figure out how when I'm ready to do that. Good move or not?

Dumb question, but I don't own my own business? Does that matter?

Didn't you just start a new ebay business or was that a car washing business?

Not me, but does selling on ebay count?

You aren't catching my drift...

To answer your question, you need to have a business but that business can be a lot of different things.

Ah yes, technically I do have a business I started years ago, doing computer consulting, even got a Tax ID from the state. Could probably figure out how to count that.

So, are there "smart" ways to put money on my new card to meet my minimums that might benefit me in other ways, like buying some kind of gift cards that give you a reward if you spend so much? Any tips? Can spend the minimum with everyday life, but thought if I could quickly reach the minimum by buying something like gift cards that provide their own rewards, so much the better.

e.g., The Holiday Inn Munich City Centre routinely costs around $500USD/night during Oktoberfest and is an easy stumble home if you have too many of da beerz...

Buying points this would only cost you $200/night.

Thanks for this idea. I just checked in early Oct and there's availability for 35,000 points a night or points and cash. It shows as $356 euros a night.

We're going to bring my dad to Oktoberfest next year for his 65th birthday. He's never been to Europe at all. Our last name is German. So looking into places now, I have a good amount of Starwood points and I got my little brother to get the SPG Amex as well so we both have points. I may tell him to get the IHG card as well so we have this option too.

It's looking like they even started pulling back the "trick". I haven't seen award availability in a while. That fish might have been fried.

Ugh, this is what I'm worried about, I hadn't seen anything at all in Bora Bora but am just hoping it's just because it's high season right now. I'm going to try to go Nov '16 or if I have to April '17. I hope the trick didn't get snuffed out because I actually found dates that way. Do you think that means they really won't have the availability we saw before? Or it's just harder to see it?

Anybody had luck with this?

If you received a Platinum MC prior to February 2015, you should be able to get another Platinum MC even if it has been less than 18 months since you last opened one. See posts: #758, #1314, and #1586. Numerous FTers received a World MC which was then replaced by a World Elite MC around February 2015 and then were able to get another World MC with the Personal Platinum MC links in the Wiki.

I haven't tried this but had applied for the plat MC back in late 2014 and did get new cards sent to me. I didn't know what they were for since i'd just gotten the original ones, so i shredded the new ones. thinking about trying it out and seeing if my wife and i can each get another bonus. i just did an exec AA and am about to close that out for a fee refund.

Your guess is as good as mine. They used to be pretty good about opening up at least a few rooms every night year round. Doesn't look like they are practicing that anymore. Which sucks. Hands down best hotel award redemption IMO.

I got the IHG card for my wife and I just for this hotel. Not that it's a waste with the 1st year being free and we'll have about 200k points, but that seems bullshite that you can't see dates on a hotel to book with rewards. Does calling in help to have them search or you haven't done that before?

IHG doesn't guarantee award availability at any of their hotels even if they have standard rooms available unlike certain programs. It can't hurt to call, but I would assume it would probably be a futile effort.

I'm very interested to see if/when they bring Kimpton hotels in to the program. Kimpton has some pretty nice hotels.

Looking for some guidance. I'm planning a trip to Boston in October, 2 people flying out of BTR or MSY. Planning to stay in a hotel or try AirBnB for the first time. I want to do as much as I can with sign=up award travel. $2000/3 months offers are in my wheelhouse in terms of minimum spend, $3000/3 months is a little more of a stretch but probably feasible.

I'm starting from scratch in terms of transferable points. CSP is off the table, as I've still got an active Chase Sapphire from when I downgraded. So far the options I've looked at are Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier ($50k points for $2k/3mos, $99 annual fee) and Gold Delta SkyMiles AMEX ($50k points for $2k/3mos, annual fee waived year 1). Southwest is a minimum of 37k points for this trip. Delta is a minimum of 50k points.

I'm leaning toward applying for the Delta card at the moment, since I'd rather not pay the Rapid Rewards annual fee, and I'm not sure what I'll be doing with 13k remaining SWRR points in the near future. I'm also not sure how to take hotels into account, as I don't usually book hotels and I'm not very familiar with the credit card rewards options. I'm wondering if paying for flights and redeeming award travel for hotels is something to consider.

Don't discount the companion certificate that comes with the Delta Platinum. That covers the annual fee every year IMO
