I've got a 5 gallon water jug full of change I'd like to cash...I'm thinking it's around $1500

Where is the best place to bring it?

I don't wanna pay 7% and wait forever at coinstar. I considered buying a coin sorter for the $100 or so that coinstar would charge.. anyone have one they would recommend?

thanks guys

Depending on the bank you are associated with some of them offer the service free to members. I know neighbors has a machine and I think la capital does too.

I bring my change to my bank once a year and they don't charge anything.
I suggest you try to go when they are not busy and divide that 5 gallon jug into some smaller sizes or you will have a pissed off banker woman.

As others have said, check with your bank first. I have always been stubborn and rolled my own coins when making a deposit. I do it now to look for collectible coins and silver pieces. Very time consuming and probably not what you are interested in doing.

That's why I would collect change, to look for silver pieces or cool old coins. Do you do it for your own interest or does it actually add in some decent value when you find the silver pieces?

My bank does it for free, but I've never brought in 5 gallons. Most I've brought is a gallon.

Don't know about your situation but my local grocery store doesn't charge the coinstar fee if you're willing to accept a voucher for groceries at that store. Since I shop there anyway it's a no-brainer.

Check with your bank.

This reminds me of a story.

After Katrina, we moved to Katy, TX. We were banking with Hibernia, which was in the process of changing over to Capital One, and they had a branch that wasn't too far away. They had a coin machine that I had used a couple of times.

One day, maybe a year after the storm, I go in, and the machine is gone. Just an empty space where it was. So I go up to the banker that is sitting nearby and I inquire as to where the machine went. She proceeds to tell me:

"Oh, we had to get rid of it. It kept breaking. You know, we have a lot of those Katrina people that unfortunetly have moved here and wanted to use the machine, and they kept breaking it, because they had dirty smelly Katrina money, and they were too stupid to figure out how to use the machine. I'm sorry, I wish they would not have come and broken it."

I guess they figured because I was white, educated, and well-dressed, there was no chance I lost my home in Katrina. Stunned, I think I said "OK", turned around, walked out, walked accross the street to a Wells Fargo, and opened up an account, and moved everything over to them.

neighbors has a coinstar at some locations

the fee is cut down to 3 or 4% for members....and I believe they waive the fee if you deposit the money to a minor's account

at least this was what i was told last time i used it

Home Bank counts the change for free if you are an account holder. Just go when its not a busy time. I go with a gallon jug about every 3 months. Usually 200-300 bucks.

Go through every single one of them. As I write this with the spot price of silver at $20.79 the melt value of pre-1965 quarters is $3.76, and dimes is $1.50. Nickels minted from 1942-1945 have a melt value of $1.17.

Coin dealers will take these off your hands for a premium or you can just save them for barter after the dollar collapses and the SHTF.

Get a bunch of coin wrappers. Tell your 9 year old son that you'll give him $20 to wrap the coins. If you don't have a 9 year old find one in the neighborhood. They love doing crap like that.

Take it to Coinstar and get an Amazon Gift Card

No fee for an e-gift card

There are more places, too.

So you are going to pay $100 for a coin sorter but don't want to pay the $105 for the 7% charge at coinstar..

Do you even math bro?

Yeah? Because afterwards I still own a coin sorter and won't have to buy it next time.

Do you even math, bro?

Yeah I do real good at counting 50 pennies, 40 nickels, 50 dimes, and 40 quarters at a time.

Try it out

Would the bank be able to tell if you were skimming a coin or two of each roll?
