Aggie has a strange endowment, shared somewhat with UT, in which they both have stock in west texas shale. They split like $40 billion

Yeah, its hard to compare LSU's with Aggie. But look at the gumps.

I donate to the endowment by paying the outrageous tuition (plus all the BS add-ons), since our TOPS Program only pays about 40%. That's about $32K per year. Send your request for donations to the politicians.

The entire LSU system is poorly funded all around. And we LSU alums show how little we value our alma mater by how little we give.
My wife and I made an agreement almost 20 years ago to give as much to the LSU Foundation annually as we spend on our football-MBB-baseball season tickets. That's why now, in our retirement, we still have not made a trip to Europe.
EVERY LSU alum should give something to the LSU Foundation even if it is only $50 annually.

Most states don't have TOPS, and their tuition is higher.

That's not how endowments work.

Judging by the responses (lack of) and the upvote to downvote ratio, I imagine most of the people here don't really care about LSU, or do not understand was an endowment does.
Was does an endowment do?

That's just retarded.

The endowment is a pool of money that is invested. The endowment money itself is not spent. Rather, the return on investment is spent to improve the university. A larger endowment also helps with the national prestige of the university, as alumni giving is one of the benchmarks used when rating at university.
I suspect people think the endowment is just money that someone like F King Alexander can use as he sees fit. It isn't, and he can't.

I gave them plenty of money during my five years there and they turned around and built a fricking lazy river that no one uses

As long as LSU keeps providing shitty student services, they won't be inspiring graduates to invest. I've got a large amount of student loan debt because the freshman advisory office gave me the opposite advice of what should have been given and mismanaged my scholarships. I now earn more money based on my 3 semesters at BRCC than I do from my BA (History) from LSU.

To compare - University of Washington has a 2 Billion dollar endowment.

That's because the university side is run like a bunch of incompetent a-holes that treat their customers (i.e. students) like garbage.
