It’s a very hard decision but I do think I take Skenes. I don’t think you look so much at draft history as you do league impact. And I still think power pitching wins in the postseason. And that’s why you gamble on Skenes.

I’d like to think Crews could impact the game like say, Mookie Betts. That’s probably best case. But if someone could get Skenes and he turns into Gerrit Cole who is a big sturdy AF dude and doesn’t miss starts, that’s pretty damn valuable too.

Crews. Only because he's an every day player. But Skenes is the best pitcher by far.

Skenes or Crews, I’m going Skenes

If you think Crews is roughly as good, or even almost as good, at playing center field and hitting as Skenes is at pitching, you pick the guy who plays every day vs twice a week or less. The caveat is team needs.

I would go Crews though I think Skenes will be up in the majors sooner.

Just the latest example of people on here that keep the football mentality. Of course they don’t draft for the 2023 roster, many HS kids will be drafted even the college kids they won’t count on til 24-25 at the earliest.

Bregman was drafted 2 overall as a shortstop when they had Correa at short.

They intended to move him from the get go, he started at 3rd in the minors immediately

This year is a little different as Crews and Skenes have a real chance of getting September call ups this season

That would be extremely rare

I would pick Crews as he probably has the higher (and safer) floor. You don’t want to whiff with a pick like that.

No he didn’t. He was drafted in 2015 and didn’t start playing third until May of 2016 about 2 months before he got called up.

Yes you are correct, he played ss the rest of the summer after he was drafted moved the following year, my mistake

But he was always going to move off of SS

Of course

The also targeted him pretty much when they did not sign Brady Aiken and knew they’d get the extra pick at 2. They were hoping Az would take Swanson who most everyone has ranked 1.

Does Skenes get to take the glove to the bigs or will Hurd get to keep it next year. The passing of the glove may be baseballs #18.

If he was going to play for the Astros yes.

The thought from the Astros organization was either he would play another position or be trade bait. It just happened that in 2016 they needed a third baseman and he ran with the position and never looked back.

Go check the history of pitchers taken at the top of draft vs college hitters taken at the top of the draft

In the last 20 years (number 1 picks):

7 pitchers
7 SS
3 OF
2 C
1 3B

And how have those guys done? 2 of the pitchers are Aiken who went unsigned, was drafted mid first the next year and needed Tommy John

Mark Appel was considered one of the best college pitching prospects and wound up being just the 3rd ever 1-1 to never make the Show

I’m sorry but this is simply not true. Perhaps you are confusing the qualities of elite pitchers that have made it, or the importance of those pitchers in the show but history shows pitchers taken high in the draft bust at far greater rate than elite college hitters.

When I say elite, I'm talking college pitchers taken #1 overall and I'm not talking about all of them. Guys like Price, Cole, Strasburg who are in MLB before the end of their second year in professional baseball. It's a small list and Skenes would qualify. I woun't post all the top 5 picks who were great college hitters that washed out.

Trevor Bauer
Scherzer
Buehler
Verlander
Gausman
Nola
Sonny gray

I mean nothing is fool proof but college pitchers are generally safer than HS guys

So you are cherry picking to suit your argument? Drafts in general are crap shots, MLB more so than the NFL or MLB. No one said college hitters never bust, or that all pitchers do but according to baseball people the hitters have a better rate of success overall
