Will you still care?

The news of USC and UCLA joining the Big10 means that more consolidation is coming. These moves are about money and exposure. The teams that play in these super conferences will be professional teams. It is only a matter of time.
When the team that plays in Tiger Stadium is a professional team that is ?owned? by the State of Louisiana, consists of elite 18-20 year-olds and 21-30 year-olds that are not NFL material, and is not connected to LSU in any meaningful way, will you still care?
I ask because I see this as a cannibalistic exercise. The SEC has a great TV contract because it has a large, reliable fan base that loves the rivalries and traditions. As rivalries and traditions take a back seat to the scheduling needs of a super conference and as the connections to the universities fade, will the fan base become unreliable? And, if it no longer "just means more" does the basis for those TV contracts that have spawned all of the changes disappear?

If these are professional teams why would there be an age cap on who could play for them? Why wouldn't a guy like Deculus, who will be out of football in 4 months, stay at LSU as a professional until he was cut from the roster (rather than aging out)?

I am 71 and have been an LSU fan since my elementary school days. I intend to remain an LSU fan regardless of our success and regardless of the college football landscape. That's my tradition. I couldn't care less about the traditions of the SEC in 1965 or now. I am an LSU fan even if LSU joins the Big 10.

I think it will never be the same. Any appeal to competition in the purest sense, that of the amateur so-called.

Same. I even care when we play women's basketball, I don't watch but I care. I care about softball and golf.
My pulse even races when watching beach volleyball. Wait, that one might be something else.

I’ve watched less and less college football the last 5 years or so.
I didn’t even watch the National Championship game the last 2 years.
I’m pretty much down to just watching LSU, and that’s probably how I’ll stay with all this upcoming nonsense.

If you don't want to watch anything but LSU, that's fine. I know people who have always been like you.
I watch college football all day and night on Saturday, and I watch the games that are on television Thursday and Friday nights, as well.
When the season kicks off, I won't be the least bit concerned about conference realignment or NIL. It's college football, and I love it. That's just me, but everyone has a right to decide what they do and don't enjoy.

I’ll always care, but the conference consolidation and current NIL/free transfer situation are causing me to care less than I have in the past. I watch and I’m emotionally invested because I’m an alum and a fan of Louisiana State University. LSU sports culture/passion was a big part of my life for a long time.
If the players don’t give a frick about LSU, and the whole thing is only about money, I’m going to care a lot less.
I’ll extrapolate that to college sports generally, not just LSU. It was more fun than professional sports for me because of the loyalty and passion that comes with “amateur” sports. Look I know that “amateur” has always been a ridiculous moniker for modern CFB, but what’s happened in the last couple years went way beyond that. College sports are adopting the things that make me disinterested in professional sports.

This is the dawn of a new era of college sports and one I think I can easily walk away from. There is no loyalty from players towards their university. It is strictly a money grab from both players and schools.
I'm sick and tired of watching a bunch of 18-year-olds, who can't hardly speak proper English, make a production about their commitment when it comes down to the final bid when they change their mind.
Since when did we start paying students, such as pre-med or pre-law, before they received their degree. Same should be for athletes. They are still learning their trade, right?

As a kid I was much more emotionally invested in my favorite teams (LSU, MICH) but now I just enjoy all games. LSU is and always will be my no1 but whatever happens I still just enjoy CFB no matter what teams. I really don’t dislike any program

Driving home from work yesterday I had this same train of thought. I'm 46 and been a fan since the Tulane game in 1982 and season ticket holder for the last 11 years.
But it just occurred to me yesterday with the changes to conferences that the LSU football rivalries of yesteryear and the last 20 years may not be the same as the rivalries 20 yrs from now. And that's okay. I'll be in 414 as long as I can get to my seats.
