Why is This the Issue That Sankey (SEC) is Willing to Go to the Mat On?

The SEC and the CFB game itself have changed so much in the last 5 years, so why is this the issue they're willing to burn it all down for?

Because they thought they could draw a line in the sand and everyone would just back then on it.

I think he jumped the gun with his threats to LSU and now he has to stand his ground.
What’s interesting is what will happen if he wins. Other teams will have to lose players as well by rule. Another question though is why didn’t he fight the Dallas judge ruling? None of this makes any sense, He’s blatantly showing favoritism and nobody cares for some reason.

Why didnt he nip this in bud in January following the Bama basketball player or when the 5 for 5 rules was enacted in June?

I think they’re using the publicity and discussion and “Kiffin attention” from this issue to push Congress to pass the bigger bill.
Honestly I don’t think anyone with power really gives a shite if a 22-year old with eligibility left that never played for an NFL team plays his/her final college year.

Again, they drew a line in the sand they thought everyone would back them on. Similar to the Sorsby situation.
Difference is everyone takes a hard line betting on your own team, and they got that backing.
The blurred lines between professional and collegiate athletes, along with, frankly, absurd eligibility determinations, have the public opinion much more split than they anticipated.
ETA: The “sanctity” of amateurism in college football died with NIL. They’re still playing that card though, and it’s not working.
Gambling on your own team is a big no no in every sport, at every level.

2 things can be true here:
1) It's a crazy place for Sankey to draw a line given the craziness with college sports, and the fact that most SEC starters are getting paid by their schools more than their definition of an "NFL player" is making.
2) It's not a hill I think we should die on. Yes, is absolute BS considering the deal with Chambliss and the OT at Texas, but I don't think adding the guys mentioned will be what puts us over the top. They'd help, sure, but we should be about the same team regardless.
Now if there's a solid CB out there or a good OL...

Because they can say “allowing pro players to play” in press releases and their media mouthpieces and hope that the shock value will sway the public to their side. Hoping that people don’t dig into the absurdity of defining a 22 year old who played in two preseason games for $50,000 as a pro and a 24 year old entering college FA and getting paid $4m to play is someone “enjoying the sanctity of college sports.”

I think he knows what the judge's verdict will be tomorrow and he's letting other people, schools, etc, give him confidence that if he threatens LSU enough, they will back down and he won't have to go to more courts.
I mean, the only law class I took at LSU was "Business Law" and remember absolutely nothing from that class. But if LSU abides by the courts and the SEC penalizes them for it, I'm pretty sure LSU will get a big pay day from the SEC.
