Just in case you missed it, the featured RB position in college football is……the QB. Taaadaaa! Thank you, thank you very much.

one thing you see with Kelly is he's not using a RB that can't block and do everything the position requires
that's why Josh Williams sees so much time
I think Kaleb Jackson and Caden Durham can be those feature RB's as long as they put the time into what Kelly wants them to do and I'm confident Frank Wilson will get them to that point

I don’t think it’s at all specific to Kelly. The position has changed a lot over the past 10 years. RBs need to be able to do more in the passing game (both blocking and receiving). The way the position has been devalued in the NFL, particularly for guys with a ton of college reps and/or any injury history, has made being a “bell cow” back much less appealing as well.
Some stats to illustrate the shift - here are the power 5 rushing leaders by season (not going overall FBS to avoid outliers where a G5 kid ran over everyone on their schedule) for the past 10 years:
2014 - 2587 yards, 184.8 ypg
2015 - 2219 yards, 147.9 ypg
2016 - 2028 yards, 183.4 ypg
2017 - 2118 yards, 162.9 ypg
2018 - 2194 yards, 168.8 ypg
2019 - 2094 yards, 161.1 ypg
2020 - 1572 yards, 131.0 ypg*
2021 - 1636 yards, 136.3 ypg
2022 - 1665 yards, 138.8 ypg
2023 - 1732 yards, 123.7 ypg
The total yards are all over the place, mostly because the number of games has been inconsistent. But look at the per-game averages. The leading P5 rusher averaged 123.7 ypg in 2023 vs. 184.8 ypg (nearly 50% more) in 2014.

Have you forgotten Berry

Well we do have the #1 RB in the country committed who is a Louisiana kid. Harlem Berry could be next the Fournette.
Wouldn't be surprised if he switched to WR. He's been playing a lot of WR in those 7v7 leagues and I think he played some slot WR in last years All-American game. Plus it would give him a much higher long term earning potential based on how the positions are paid these days.
eta: It feels like O missed out on some top in-state RBs; big oof looking at the 2022 class, but that was really just one year. In reality, there just hasn't really been many highly rated in-state RB recruits.
4* RB Recruits from LA (On3 composite ranking)
2014: Fournette (2), Williams (379)
2015: Redacted (47), Ducre (163), Brosette (209), Bussey (333)
2016: Zero 4 star RBs
2017: Etienne (222), Jordan-Swilling (266), CEH (281)
2018: Pooka (280)
2019: Emery (12), TDP (119)
2020: Shaadie Clayton-Johnson (185), Ja'Khi Douglas (296)
2021: Hargrove (240)
2022: Moss (88), Citizen (95), Etienne (286), Allen (346), Sampson (393)
2023: Jackson (189), Holly (261)
2024: Zero 4 star RBs

Louisiana always produced great RB but I’m puzzled by the lack of a dominant RB room or featured Back since 2019. Where did the program or Coaches go wrong?
I don't know, wasn't John Emery rated the #1 running back in the country.

Kaleb Jackson - Natl 191, Pos 12, St 9 (LA)
Looking at this kid physically, how could they rate him so low?
I'm not sure what his numbers looked like in HS, if he camped much, or maybe he started football late. Physically, to me, he looked an awful lot like Emery coming out of HS. I know Emery hasn't lived up to the hype but I sure hope he can put it together this season. I think Jackson will be a stud, but I thought that about Emery and I also thought that about Tae Provens (for different reasons) if anyone remembers him. So my opinion on this may be suspect,

A star running back doesn't mean the same it did back in the day. Best skill players are no longer the Running back like it used to be. shite if Chase was born in the 80's he likely plays Running back instead of WR.

It all worked in unison. First of all Burrow is great. But the whole rushing attack was successful because of the unpredictability of the play. Probably 1/3 of that stemmed from Burrow’s ability to run. The RPO/ inside zone / zone read all play off one another & it’s a cheat code when the QB can run & pass in the manner Burrow could
Yeah, Burrow being about to run a delay on 3rd down was great. It for sure added to the offense. I just don't agree that ceh had all this open grass off the strength of burrow's rushing ability.
I'd like to see what the rushes were for each game and if they were similar each game.
Having chase, jefferson, Marshall, and moss out in routes helped ceh operate. Dcs had to deal with defending 3 #1s and then a running Burrow.

He also played the game of his life on the biggest stage of his career against Alabama. Those highlights were played over and over and over. He went God Mode.
Right. And most scouts usually watch the 3 top games. That Alabama game for sure got the chiefs to draft him at 32.
He was running all over the bama defense. Had that memorable touchdown catch in the left corner of the endzone.

It's not. We've gone a few years without one but for decades we had a feature back. Definitely a better stretch of feature backs than most programs. We were arguing to be RBU there for a while.

That's any good offensive coach. Ceh could perform in all 3 phases of the offense. That is what makes an offense deadly. When you can call a pass/run out of the same formation. When your rb doesn't come off the field.
3 wide/1rb/1 tight end. Basically operate in that the entire game.
Now I think Sloan is going to mix it up much more this year. With jayden daniels they stayed in that all yr.

There were games last year where Diggs essentially was the feature back.

I think this is a lot of it. Fournette/Guice ain't walking through that door.
I think if we got someone that could play that CEH role we'd be solid. He wasn't an elite runner, blocker, or receiver but he was really good at all 3. Get someone that can get yards but do the rest above average as well and I think we'll see a stronger run game.
It's also hard to commit to the run when you have JD in the backfield. This season will tell us a good bit.

If I remember correctly Kaleb had a torn ACL or something like that his Sr year.
