Houston gonzaga connecticut, georgetown, ect..ect..
I have always wondered why smaller schools have a richer basketball tradition than l s u and other big name universities.?
Do they have more money?

Houston and Connecticut aren’t small schools.

They “hit” on the right HC. LSU doesn’t have that guy now.
Georgetown wasn’t great prior to Thompson…they haven’t been since.
UConn was nothing before Calhoun. They struggled after he left (even though Ollie lucked into a NC) until they found the right guy again.
Houston was great in the 70’s and 80’s. Then, you heard nothing about them for nearly 30 years…before they found the right guy.
The HC is everything.

What?
Houston has a larger enrollment and UConn is about the same size as LSU. Also both have been a better program than LSU historically. UConn is basically a blue blood at this point. Gonzaga goes all out for basketball helps that Few is also a top 5 coach in the country. Most these schools in the northeast or northwest prioritize basketball over football, because mostly it’s the only sport they have that generates revenue.

Check out their football programs.
And for the record, Houston is not a small school. It is bigger than LSU(enrollment)

They hire the right coach. Houston wasn’t any good for 30 years until they hired Sampson. Georgetown has fallen off a cliff since the Thompson’s left. St. John’s had gone dormant for 30 years until Pitino was hired. Just look at us, the dichotomy from year to year depending on who’s coaching the team. In basketball, more than any other sport, hirimg the right coach is paramount.

when you can only realistically compete in one sport, you go all in on that one sport.

“small schools” does not include Houston
Houston is the biggest school in the 4th largest city in the country
their enrollment is about 46K
LSU enrollment is about 39K
Houston would be 4th in the SEC by enrollment
they are a basketball school with a rich history in a big basketball area

Small schools?
The University of Houston has 47,000 students in a city whose metro population is 5 million, more than that of the entire state of Louisiana.
Small schools?
Uh-huh.

Yep. Coach is Everything in basketball.
Just look at Alabama and Auburn pre
Nate Oats and Bruce Pearl and now.
We actually did “hit” on the right one, but sadly fired him.

Houston is still a commuter school... who wants to live in that area of Houston? Heck, nobody that goes to TSU next door wants to live there either
