re: Why do LSU batters almost never swing at the first pitch?

When you know offense is not your strength, sometimes the best offense is to get the pitcher deep into counts to get him out of the game. By Sun though, they should have gone after the first pitch strike.

This
Since Cliff Goodwin left you can see a decrease in quality at bats and production from our offense.
Javy is a yes man, with no defined hitting philosophy

but when an umpire is giving a breaking ball pitcher 6 inches off the outside black, that's pretty tough.
Maybe LSU pitchers should have thrown 6 inches off the black, too.
Then maybe we wouldn't have given up 11.
I guess our hitting coach and pitching coach were both outsmarted yesterday.

Not enough left handed bats in the lineup this year. Back in 2010 we had too many left handed bats in the lineup.
That's a recruiting issue...not a hitting issue.
That ump Saturday was calling strikes 6 inches off the outside black against right handed hitters. The lefties in our lineup didn't have that problem.
ETA: On Saturday, Eades was getting the calls on the outside too.

Getting smoked 10-1 pretty much confirms that.

MAN I LOVE BASEBALL!!
Typically, you're either taking a pitch b/c your told to or you want to make the pitcher pitch to you or you just need a feel for pitcher style and speed of pitch.
However, typically, the solid meat isn't going to just roll down the pipe..When it happens on a #1 punch it out! I might be wrong but essentially pitcher has the upper hand at that point.
Josh Hamilton almost always wails on the 1st pitch. In some respects that is why he is pretty successful. He is a dangerous hitter on 0-0 count 1st pitch.

You can't have a team hitting concept in baseball (treating everyone the same), unless you have 9 guys who can hit anything.
Every hitter is unique, and you're at the mercy of the umps as well. Good hitters ought to be allowed to hit if the pitch is there. Especially with runners in scoring position.
I'm no coach by any means, but unless a pitcher is so overpowering that he can't be hit, then he CAN be hit. And if he can be hit, then if the pitch is there, you go after it no matter what the count - if you have good hitters.
I didn't see the games this weekend, so I'm not commenting on that, but just on what I've learned. It's probably Germans, but if you need a wrench you use a wrench, not a screwdriver.
We have a good team who had a bad weekend, we'll be OK...

Back in the day, I was a first pitch, fastball hitter, and there were a lot of us around the game. It is all relative to the pitcher, situation, tendancies and such. However, the bottom line is that everyone is taught not to swing when balls are outside the strike zone. And the greatest percentage of strikes are thrown when? On the first pitch.

I hope you had at least 9.

My understanding is a hitter should be very selective when they have no strikes them. They are looking for "their" pitch to hit.

I didn't play on the college level but as an ex pitcher I would have much rather played against a team that had the bat on their shoulders. I could throw BP fastballs for strikes and get ahead without using much effort
Do you really think that Mainieri is going to sit there and allow an opposing pitcher to throw a bp fastball early in a count without changing the approach at the plate?

I do not claim to know alot about baseball, but my 12 yr old son plays for an tourney ball organization where just about all the coaches have played college baseball, and they do this on a regular basis....

If that were true, he would never see a 1st pitch around the zone.
