He NEVER had a winning season at Vandy (19-25 overall). Was he an exciting young coach when hired? Was he a CEO type or x's and o's guy.

But for his first 3 seasons at LSU he never had another winning season at Indiana and had the worst record in the XFL.

Curley made everyone look good. Pat Sullivan thought we were paying his buyout. Notre Dame alum. Seemed like a decent idea at the time

Because Joe Dean was shopping at K-mart for LSU's next coach. DiNardo had a number of 5-6 finishes with Vandy (which was quite good for Vandy), so that was the appeal since he was already in the SEC.

He did have it rolling for a while though at LSU and he accomplished some very good things. No matter how it ended, he restored hope to LSU fans and showed us what was possible with the program.

LSU would not pay the buyout for pat sullivan at tcu
Dinardo was next and paid his own buyout at bandy

Dinardo did some very positive things for LSU

DiNardo was actually a good coach and brought the program back after the Curley years.

He failed at the end by hiring, and not firing, DC Lou Tepper. If he'd have fired Tepper, he may have kept the program on the upswing.

But then we wouldn't have hired Saban, so it all worked out.

I had an hour-long conversation with Joe Dean regards the firing of Dinardo. Joe was defensive and not ready to pull the trigger. I ended the conversation by saying, "Joe, either do it now or do it later...it is inevitable." He finally did. I take no responsibility, but I did add fuel to the fire. Dinardo was his own worst enemy when it came to his assistants...micro-manager and paranoid.

Dinardo was Offensive Coordinator of the 1990 Colorado team that won the national championship.

Dean got him cheap and hope he flourished with LSU.

Because he looked promising in Vandy's 0-65 loss to Tenn in the last game of the season

Didn’t DiNardo also win SEC coach of the year @ Vandy? Could have sworn he did, plus he 100% brought the magic back for a few years.

We weren't exactly a prime destination for up-and-coming coaches back then.

Saban saw what could be but he had to make sure that the AD was going to invest in building facilities and what not. Most coaches want a ready-made program to take over, so without someone to demand that, guys like Dinardo were who we had to choose from.

He had made Vandy at least remotely competitive in the SEC for four seasons...which was looked at as a monumental accomplishment given they had gone 5-28 in the three years prior to his arrival (many of the losses via blowout).

But more than anything, LSU wasn't paying anything close to top dollar for football coaches at that time. Pat Sullivan was set to be announced until a last minute fight over the payment of his buyout at TCU could not be resolved (LSU refused to pay all of it). Dean quickly pivoted to Dinardo who essentially agreed to eat his buyout with Vandy.

To his credit, Dinardo did "bring back the magic" 95-97 were fun years to be a LSU fan after 6 years of losing. The 98 team (which started in the top 10) was expected to be the pinnacle of the rebuild. Instead, new DC Lou Tepper's defense was horrible and LSU dropped a ton of excruciatingly close games in route to a 3-8 record. Dinardo refused to make a change at DC going into the following season. That led to a disastrous 2-8 start with an inexperienced team that ultimately got Dinardo fired.

Left to his own devices Joe Dean would have hired another "cheap" HC to follow Dinardo. It was Mark Emmert who directed Dean to pay Nick Saban an (at the time) astronomical salary of $1 million per year to become LSU's next HC. That singular decision changed the direction of LSU football for the next (going on) three decades.

Yeah.

connection to Colorado and Bill McCartney. People who are young don't understand just how big a deal that was- NOBODY won the Big 8 except Nebraska and Oklahoma; and then McCartney suddenly won 3 in a row with the Buffs, with a national title. Period wasn't as long, but it's like when Spurrier emerged at Florida, and suddenly had the Gators as the top SEC team.

What I remember was a swing and miss with Sullivan, LSU refused to pay his buyout. Seems incredibly petty and cheap now, but that's how LSU ran things under Dean.

Moved on to Dinardo, who had Vandy playing respectable and competitive. The W-L record was irrelevant; thought process was that Vandy should not stay on the field with anyone. 5-6 there translated to 8-3 at LSU, which is what happened.

Dinardo was a necessary part of LSU's history.
When Curly came in, he brought in an underdog mentality, we'd have to play great to "upset" teams like Auburn etc. Didn't work here.
Dinardo "brought back the magic"... LSU should never be an underdog. Teams should be excited to play us, not the other way around.
