Dean was the worst AD ever. He allowed 6 losing seasons in a row for football. Kept Curley for 4 friggin years.

The short sleeve oxford with tie look is why Dean hired him

He wanted to keep Curley. Emert forced his hand. Tiger Stadium was down to under 40,000 at kickoff for many games. fricking idiot (Dean) hiring another idiot (Curley).

Didn’t DiNardo also win SEC coach of the year @ Vandy? Could have sworn he did, plus he 100% brought the magic back for a few years.

Kevin Faulk and Morris Watts, and Booger McFarland and Carl Reese brought back the magic while DiNardo stayed out of the way. Similar situation to CEO.

Before Dinardo though, those type players would've been at FSU or Miami. Instead they stayed and played for LSU.

Winning season at Vandy was nearly impossible. He had some impressive wins there…

I remember he took over a multi year 1-10 Vandy and knocked off ranked Georgia and Ole Miss teams. I think he also won 3 bowls when he was there.

He never won a bowl game at Vandy. Ironically it was rumored at the time that he was being groomed to be the HC at Notre Dame.

Because Joe Dean was likely the worst AD in SEC history.

ah, makes sense, if he didn't have winning seasons, he probably didn't win bowls...

bowl wins were at LSU

I seem to remember he pushed out the defensive coordinator who went to Texas. I could be not remembering correctly but I seems like that was the beginning of the end.

LSU was tight tight with money and as grandaddy used to say, "You get what you pay for..." and we did. We also went on the cheap for Curly Hallman. The reason Southern Miss was winning, and got Hallman the job, was the USM QB was Brett Favre. Curly was a bad hire. Those were some rough years. And we might as well throw in Mike Archer. Vietnam flashback on those years.

1. To actually win football games.
2. He brought back the magic defeating Bama and then #1 Florida.

He made some mistakes though
1. QB controversies Herb Tyler and Josh Booty
2. He lost the locker room over Booty
3. Lou Tepper was a disaster.

Basically, he was a good coach just not the great one.

Mark Emert told String Music to go get the best coach in America. I’m even sure that Dean didn’t pick him Emert did.

My cousin was on the BOS when they hired Hallman and he thought it was a home run hire. Then they fired Hallman to get Dinardo. At that time it was LSU’s m.o. (hire an up and comer). Dinardo laid the foundation and Saban built the empire. Dinardo just wasn’t an ex’s and o’s.

Plus Gerry was “Crazy Bout a Ford Truck!”

He did have a good resume as an assistant coach and was doing a credible job at Vanderbilt until Tennessee blew him out in his last game. And he fit Joe Dean’s budget.

Because Joe Dean hired Pat Sullivan from TCU and Sullivan had 400k buyout. Joe Dean told Sullivan that he was not paying the buyout. So Pat Sullivan retracted his agreement to come to LSU even though he had already been announced as the new LSU Coach.

Gerry Dinardo was at Vandy and had withdrawn his name after it was apparent LSU was going with Sullivan. Then Joe Dean had to go back to Dinardo and ask him to become LSU’s next Football Coach because Dinardo was the only other “Finalist”.

Sullivan's TCU buyout was $1 million, not 400K.
Joe Dean never hired Sullivan. He sent him home that day without an official offer because Joe wanted Sullivan's buyout to be resolved. There was wide media speculation, but never any "announcement" about Sullivan.

When Sullivan said TCU wouldn't release him from the buyout, Dean called Dinardo and DID make the offer.

After his initial interview at LSU, Dinardo went back to Nashville. When Dean didn't call back right away with an offer, Dinardo told his Vandy players that he was staying.

But Dean called him the next day.

The only "list" that Dean was using were the few names that a coaching search group (it included Gil Brandt of the Cowboys) had given him. To my knowledge Dean only interviewed Sullivan and Dinardo.

Dinardo signed a five year deal for $300K per year. His base salary was $95,000 per year.
