We don't have time for Goody to recover his confidence this year...from this point forward, every game is too important. Need to try someone else...

dude. he's fricking awful in his last 4 outings. you can't be that big of a sunshine pumper.

There is some truth to this.

But the counter point is he was absolutely untouchable prior to that. His ERA was well below 1.00.

I don't think it is a clear cut decision either way. This is why Mainieri gets paid to be head coach. We don't really have anyone else that can fill the role. Cotton is too valuable in his current role, IMO.

My guess is that Goody will still be the closer. But, there will not be an automatic move to him just because we are in the 9th. He will come in when we have to make a move in the 9th.

Thank God LSU doesn't have a knee jerk reaction coach. It's baseball. There at peaks and valleys in performances. Just have to hope the peaks are at the right time. If you think our closers confidence is a little shaky , what do you think will happen if he is benched? Our bullpen has been outstanding this year. Blown saves have been the exception this year. Our bullpen aging great is the difference between last year and this year.

So your solution is to throw someone in there that hasn't faced this type of 9th inning pressure all year?

I think I'd stick w/ the guy w/ 10 saves. He's run into a rough patch, but we don't win the SEC title w/o him. I trust Dunn/CPM will work w/ Nick & get it corrected, whether it's a mechanical issue or something mental.

The hell you can't! Right now Goody being repeatedly shelled in the ninth is what will keep this team from even reaching a Super Regional much less Omaha. You feel guilty about completely shutting him down and worried you might "kill his confidence?" Then hell let him pitch in situational ABs and see if he can get one out first!! For God sakes this is tier 1 collegiate baseball, not daycare.....If you don't produce, you have a seat and the next man gets a shot. Mainieri has done this all year with the line-up, why is it all the sudden unacceptable to do it with the pitching staff?? Bonvillain certainly had a short leash his last outing didn't he? From here on out whoever has the hot hand needs to stay in the game, the hell with this "bring in Goody just because" bullshite. I feel bad for these kids who worked their assess off and had a great season only to have it pissed away by a stubborn coach. You do what needs to be done for the good of the team - not the individual at this point. Rumbelow clearly is not the answer either, his nerves definitely get the best of him in close games.

Even though Cotton didn't have anywhere near his best outing Friday, I would switch to him as the closer. This would be the easiest way to change things-- after all, he has pitched well in many tight games this season.

Maybe try Goody as set-up man, or put him in games with only a 5+ run lead. This is not the time of the season for the closer to go through a bad stretch of pitching!

Well Josh, we lost two game to State and got eliminated in the SEC tourney. This means we aren't going to get a national seed. So we will be on the road and will lose thus pissing it away

I'd like to see Cotton in the 7th and 8th and Broussard in the 9th.

This guy should never see the mound again this year. I'm not saying that because of yesterday. For the past month he has been without a doubt our worse pitcher. Work him midweek next year and see if he improves any. Right now he is a liability to the team. if nichols can hit him like a high school freshman, wouldn't common sense say that anyone can????

Goody gave up several hits and a run in his save against SC. Hitters have been making very solid contact lately and he has been missing his locations. I'm not saying we toss him out the trash man, lighten up, all I'm saying is there is cause for concern

True, even when opponents didn't score, they've been getting solid contact for over a month. Does he just throw fastballs (and maybe not so fast any longer)? I guess he won't be following Gausman into the draft!
Cotten is too valuable eating up 2 or 3 innings if starter doesn't throw a C.G.
At least not playing this w.knd means they can all rest up & CPM will have his choice with everyone rested

Let me just say that I am a Mainieri supporter, but I hate this argument. Curly Hallman was paid to make football decisions, but that did not make him good at it. Mainieri struggles with when to pull pitchers. Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but he does struggle at times.

Goody can certainly return to form, but something seens be off with him.

This is a joke, right?

I love how LSU consistently has the worst coaching in the nation (according to some retards on here) yet contends for championships almost every year.

You missed the point.

The point was that this is not a clear cut decision but Mainieri doesn't get to ignore it. He's going to have to make a critical decision.

Making a change at closer has its own negative potential. Also, Goody was dominant for 9/10ths of the year. To win it all, we probably need that kind of performance out of our closer.

The idiots in this thread are the ones who are speaking absolutely one way or another about what should happen. This is a real tough decision that is going to require Mainieri trying to evaluate how Goody will do going forward which is going to be counter to some significant piece of information that supports the other decision.
