The problem for him is that he's NOT very versatile defensively... he's a lefty.

Sure he is. He can play 1B in the MLB right now if he wanted to. To be able to play a second position is always valuable, even if it is LF.

Because in the era of the DH, there are a bunch of guys that, if forced to play the field, really only belong at 1B anyway.

That means 2nd, 3rd and shortstop are out. And he can't pitch or play catcher (I assume, never saw him behind the plate).

There aren't a ton of guys moving around the field like this anyway. Not sure where that expectation comes from.

Now, I do remember Mark Grace at 1st with the Cubs back in the day, he wasn't a power hitter. But he was consistently over .300 batting average, and they had Sandberg at 2nd providing power (40 HR one year). If he can find a team that has a power hitter somewhere they aren't expected to be like that, and he can hit for average well, he can maybe stick and find a home.

The MLB is not as traditional as it once was when it comes to fitting a position. Not every 1B is hitting 40 HRs anymore, nor are they 6'4" and large.

Another interesting point that was made by Ben McDonald during one of the games, is that an elite defensive 1b isn’t as useful in the pros as college because the infield throws are so much better. Big league 1bs aren’t having to dig multiple short hops every game like Tre was doing in college. I never noticed it but guess Ben knows what he’s talking about.

If you're not the everyday starter at a position, you can hang around awhile by being a utility infielder, or backup outfielder. Gives you a pinch hitter and pinch runner.
He doesn't have power, but he can probably be a 300 hitter, so you can see him come in to maybe start a rally. Problem is, if he stays on the field, he's going to have to go to 1st or outfield.

No, but it's still a template that teams use when crafting a lineup. Sure, they stray from things at times, but 1st base IS a place you can stash an immobile guy with a big bat. His fielding won't kill you if you have a 2nd baseman with range, and he gives you more on offense in balance than you lose.

Tre doesn't need to be a 30 HR guy, if he can start racking up doubles at a high rate. That's something I could see. But he'd have to be a better baserunner than he is now.

Hard to say cuz Furniss ran a legit for 4.3 40 and had a 42" vertical.

People must forget how good Brad hawpe was.

Most only remember now. Morgan is amazing (worst hair in college baseball) and an athletic freak but Eddie and Hawpe were elite college players.

Sure wish Jones wouldn’t have started slumping, but one big positive was getting Tre back to first. What a treat it has been watching him play first base the last 3 years.

I watch a lot of MLB and see a lot of poir throws scoooed up by first basemen. Remember the elite infielders gave tremendous range and big arms and they can get to a lot of balls in awkward pisiyion only to make throws in vicinity of first base where the good first basemen gobble them up.

You being pissy that people think Morgan is the better all around player is very on brand.

One minute you guys are screaming about offense and to fit your argument, you go defense. I don’t remember Furniss being a bad first baseman at all. He was smooth at the plate and on first. While he may not have saved many errant throws, he was solid.
The fact that he was an 2 time AA, Dick Howser award winner, semifinal list / runner up for Golden Spikes and inducted in both the LSU and NCAA baseball HOF, it is hard to argue that Tre was better.

FYI - I can’t stand that SMD guy.

That ball vs Kentucky was unreal. I would have loved to see the Trackman on that one.

Bonus is he is married to my favorite sideline reporter - Julia Morales. She of UT. I wonder if they met during the CWS?

People getting downvoted for pointing out that MLB will treat Tre exactly how Jay did. He replaced him with a much worse fielder who was a big bat and then stashed Tre in the OF.
The only reason Tre was on first at the end of the season was because Jones slumped so bad.

Someone would have to have a Crews, McDonald, or T Walker type career to displace Furniss

Johnny Tellechea was a stud in 1991. He was every bit as good as Morgan at 1st.

I think Coach Mainieri was floating the idea of doing that his freshman year. I think ultimately, playing a left-hander there was a bridge to far for Coach.

ETA:

quote:

Morgan is so good defensively that LSU coach Paul Mainieri said that if was brave enough, he would make Morgan the first left-handed shortstop in SEC history. Morgan is also a great hitter who as a freshman batted third throughout LSU’s fall scrimmages and consistently put balls in the gap.

Idk about that, but what I do know is that Jared will hit 30 bombs his junior year if we go deep into the cws
