I am curious to know from people that know a hell of a lot more than me what his chances are in pro baseball. I hear people say his bat isn’t good enough. But my way of thinking is it isn’t like he is bad and his defense is incredible. I would think someone gives him a good shot to make it.
his glove is overkill for the position. It would be desired at middle infield (especially second), but he can't play there. He's a good contact hitter and place setter, but doesn't have the power you want at 1st.
If you put him in the outfield, he again doesn't have the power you want, lacks the blazing speed that would make up for it, and doesn't have the arm to throw anyone out at the plate.
It sucks for him, if he was a righty he'd be a 2nd baseman for awhile in the bigs.

Depends who you classify as a first basemen. Like lester pointed out, lots of great hitters played first and their offense will trump tre’s. Guys like furniss, matt clark, dean, katz, and hawpe are all better hitters but dont have the glove tre does.
Id prob rather any of those guys at first over tre stricly because they were better hitters.
And a big lol at anyone putting tre on furniss’s leve offensively

Cool seeing this list. Some good ones. Mason Katz had a pretty swing!

Tre' was a more complete 1b and more valuable player than Eddy Furniss. Deal with it. It's like accepting PP7 was good as Cassanova. It happens.
I would take Furniss over Tre, because Furniss was a good defensive 1b, so you would not be giving up much defense. No way Furniss makes the out on that safety squeeze, but he’d get almost every other out Tre got. And Furniss would give so much more at the plate.
I’d take PP7 over Casanova, or any other corner who has ever worn cleats, except Deion Sanders.

The MLB is not going to use up one of its power hitting positions just to get a good glove at first. Tre has to develop power if he’s going to make it. I bet that’s why he retooled his swing this season. He might do it. We will al be rooting for him. And if he doesn’t make it he will still never be forgotten for that play at the biggest moment on the biggest stage!

While not a great offensive threat and because I’m older than most in here, Johnny Tellechea from the early 90’s was a really good defensive first baseman’s too. But I agree on Morgan being the best defensive 1b man

Morgan will get a shot to play in the pros. Being left handed with his bat 2 ball skills alone makes him valuable. Couple that with his defensive versatility & his athleticism, he is definitely a legitimate pro prospect.

Best defensive first basemen we have had. Most athletic first basemen we have had. And a nice steady bat in the lineup.

Don Mattingly would like a word...

Lefty bat, if improves as OF, could definitely be a rotational/utility guy

Without the best defensive player ever, maybe in collegiate history!

Well, I got downvoted to hell for disagreeing with Bill Franques saying he’s the best college first baseman of all time.
So apparently he’s the best college first baseman of all time.

Right behind this LSU titan of the position

In college, I absolutely agree. At any level? I’d go with 11 time gold glove Keith Hernandez or maybe Don Mattingly, but I’m probably older than you.
I'm old too. Heck, I saw Ernie Banks play 1B in person.
Tre's glove is better than Hernandez or Mattingly.
If picking one 1B from our history, I'd probably take Furniss and maybe Hawpe before Tre.

if Tre was right handed he’d be a high end shortstop

Very few people are difference makers at first base. Tre was one of the rare few who could change a game by his 1b play.

Tre is a late game defensive sub for Furniss on the All Time Team.

quote:The problem for him is that he's NOT very versatile defensively... he's a lefty. That means 2nd, 3rd and shortstop are out. And he can't pitch or play catcher (I assume, never saw him behind the plate).

That leaves him at 1st, and the outfield. Doesn't seem to have the raw speed to play center as a defensive replacement, so you're talking LF and RF. And he doesn't have the cannon arm to throw people out at the plate.
It really does suck for him, he's an elite middle infielder trapped in a lefthander's body.
Now, I do remember Mark Grace at 1st with the Cubs back in the day, he wasn't a power hitter. But he was consistently over .300 batting average, and they had Sandberg at 2nd providing power (40 HR one year). If he can find a team that has a power hitter somewhere they aren't expected to be like that, and he can hit for average well, he can maybe stick and find a home.
