For many decades umpires wore light blue dress shirts.

I umpired for 6 years in the 90s and early 2000s. My first two years we wore the blue dress shirts. Starting in third season we switched to the dri fit polos, and we started wearing them in black, light blue, navy, and red.

1, navy is a shade of blue. 2, they still wear the lighter blue that gave them the moniker on occasion.

I umpire for the LHSOA. We have blue and black sets.

It probably would not be good to scream "come on black"
