I've read 2 different scenarios that this happened.
1) BK promised him 5 during HS recruiting. If JD5 hasn't won the Heisman at this point, I have no problem BK promising this. JD5 was not a Heisman winner yet so you can't forsee that this would be an issue.
2) The #5 was promised this year while DJ was negotiating staying with LSU.

Which is it? Why didn't he wear 5 last season if he was promised it by BK?

Because BK reneged on the promise after DJ was enrolled. Kiffin decided to honor the original promise and keep his current player happy over the feelings of a former player that Kiffin had no connection to.

It sounds like BK promised Pickett during his recruitment that he could have #5 after Jayden Daniels left. This would’ve been before Daniels won the Heisman. Kiffin came along and honored the promise made by Kelly to Pickett

This was the best move for Kiffen to make. It upholds the value of an LSU promise made to a recruit. We should never tell players that their number will be retired. One day you are going to run out of numbers.

You do know that Jayden was already in the League when DJ was being recruited right?

Agreed, I hope DJ balls the frick out this season and legit makes people debate who was the better #5 I'm LSU history. I know it's harder for a DB to do that than a QB, and I wish it would just go away, but since it definitely WON'T, I'd love to see him explode even more than his freshman season

JD’s not OK with Pickett wearing it till he leaves then retiring 5? If not, IMO, he can GFH

Pickett was an elite prospect, his recruitment didn't just start in his senior season. Teams were on him as early as his freshman year.

And it came down to us, Oregon and Miami, with Fla, Fla State and UGA still in the mix.

So I don't doubt promises were made. Teams need to honor those.

You do know that guys who are good enough to be 5 star recruits are being recruited well before their senior year of high school?

Jayden was in the 2024 NFL draft.

Pickett took his first unofficial visit to LSU in March 2022, before Jayden had even taken a snap at LSU yet.

I don't think I'm alone in saying that if I never hear the name Brian Kelly/BK again I'm good with it.

I have zero problem with what LSU and Kiffin did.

As i understand, only #20 is officially out of rotation. Burrow's #9 can be assigned, they just haven't done it.
Let's forget all the "Joe won the natty and Jayden didn't" crap, it's not relevant. Jayden will/should get his jersey retired, because winning the Heisman is a great individual accomplishment.

DJ Pickett wasn't a random high school recruit, he was an elite 5 star corner. Think Deion Sanders, Patrick Peterson, Derek Stingley, etc. Everyone recruited him, going back to late middle school for some. There might be some folks that say "he ain't that good", but if he hit the portal he'd instantly be the top player in it, due to potential and what he's already shown.
LSU outbid UGA, Oregon, Miami, Fla State, Fla and others to get him to come here. Part of that was a (maybe casual?) promise that he could keep his #5, which he wore his entire playing career up until college. They didn't pull that number off of a returning player, forcing someone else to give it up. And it's not like it's a number that doesn't fit the position (like, giving 99 to a QB, or 21 to a lineman).

If someone coming in wanted #9, and was considered an elite, can't-miss prospect (which is what Pickett was), you give it to him. It doesn't detract from the prior player.

All this drama over a jersey.

So stupid.

Thanks Tiger Prawn and others.

I guess from LSU and Kiffin's view you may not expect a former Heisman winner to make a big deal about another player using his number.
But I think LSU should've probably had a discussion with JD5 and let him know the situation. I think he probably would've been ok with it had he been informed of it all. I think what probably upset JD5 or his camp was not being in on the conversation and being blindsided with it. Then you factor in #20 and #9 not being used and it adds to it.
Do I think it's an over-reaction by JD5 team? Yes.
But I think LSU should've approached him before hand and discussed the situation they were in.

A number is not retired until it is formally retired. Until it happens, if ever, the number should be fair game.

If Kelly promised him the number, then why didn’t he wear it last year?

I think it’s clear after JD won the Heisman (which was before Pickett ever committed) that the number was going to be taken out of circulation.

Kelly gets fired. Lane doesn’t give two shits about LSU tradition or JD5. He just wants to keep a current player happy. Current player asks for the number and Lane gives it to him.

JD5 finds out about it. Takes it as a sign of disrespect from a coach he doesn’t know and a school that fired his boss and all the people that were there when he was there, and he says fine disassociate me from anything LSU related.

Or maybe Lane gives 2 bigger shits about keeping an elite player on the current roster and out of the portal. ?????
