It’s impressive when you think about it. O started as an interim. Later became his own interim. Then turned the team over to Davis to be an interim.

When we hired O I felt like we had given up on keeping up with the Bama’s and Ohio States of the world. Those teams don’t settle for best available. And they definitely don’t settle for the D-line coach. They go out and make an unavailable guy available. That’s why this Kelly hire is so huge. We didn’t settle. There’s varying reports on whether Kelly was the first choice but let’s say he wasn’t. All that tells me is our AD had the calm, patience, chest and skill to go out and find another whale. He didn’t panic through a tantrum and hire the D-line coach.

He became one whe Woodward shortchanged him on DC and OC hires. If the ND DC comes here it will all but prove that Woody submarined O.

Marcus Freeman is the new HC at ND. He is not coming here.

O submarined O partly because he's O and partly because Joe Burrow's rarely are available.

No one short changed him. No respectable DC or OC wanted to work for O plan and simple.

O was a joke and even in 2019 he was nothing more than a joke all over national media while Aranda Brady and Burrow steered us to a national title.

In retrospect, a bag of Funyuns would have been a better option than the shrimp boat captain

Herman was the only coach I wanted. Hated the idea of any of the other guys. People can say what they want, but Herman would be still coaching us if that's who he chose. Dude's last year when he was fired, they were 7-3 in a covid year. He is the only coach at Texas since 2009, to have a 10 win season, and not have a losing season. They had 3 straight losing seasons before him, he had winning seasons his whole time there, then they had a losing season the very next year after he was fired. Heard about Texas boosters getting in his way a lot too.

So this one incident has “changed coaching searches?” Ok.

It’s kind of funny how SW has changed coaching searches…any coach is a candidate now it used to only be coaches at lesser programs or assistants.

I think that's a great point, we were very limited in scope of search under Alleva because we had an AD who was frankly not very good at it. He did not have a good network to consult because he was not very well respected in circles you need to be to hire coaches at this level, and his interpersonal and public communication skills were just flat out not very good.

Kelly wasn’t on the radar this search. With a competent AD in charge there’s no telling who they could have targeted.

Before Kelly and Riley how many coaches have been hired away from top 10 programs during the season?

Once Herman ship had sailed, what were the other reasonable names to consider? I remember thinking that there wasn't much that I was impressed with but can't really remember. It was almost like Orgeron as the default wasn't much worse than the other options.

Well, Brian Kelly for one...

He deserved to be shortchanged, and Freeman didn't come here because he likely saw the writing on the wall for Orgeron who fired an NC winning DC and former head coach after one year and then basically forced out his hires on the other side.

Some of you want to blame Woodward for this, and really the thing to blame him for was the ridiculous parameters of O's extension that he never should have gotten.

O owns the shitty hires, and you can easily see that from his reasoning for his hirings.
