I lived there from 1980-1983 and loved it. It was fine back then. Earl Gros Avenue.

Savings and Loan crisis. Lots of properties were sold for a song and they went Sec 8. The surrounding apartments and 4 plexes slowly died and went Sec 8 as well.
what's known as Mall City and the Gardere Area were originally young professionals and students...all when down hill as new units were built where they could move into a nice new place for what they were paying at the older places so the owners went section 8....that's what happens when administrations approve permits for new units thinking it will increase the tax base...

Everyone I talked to said Katrina when so many people moved up here really was the downfall

It was pretty shitty by 2003/2004. It wasn't totally ghetto yet, but the trajectory was very obvious by then.

It extends beyond college. I knew multiple mid - late 20s girls with solid post grad jobs and their parents were still paying luxury apartment rent in Houston. Also had a boss that was doing this for multiple mid 20s children and unsurprisingly hounded everyone for daily billing.

This is insane to me. When I drive through LSU and see BMW's, Mercedes and Porsches parked next to $85,000 Z-71's my mind is blown.
And a shite load of them are with out of state plates. Not just Texas, either.
Maryland
New Jersey
Indiana
Illinois
Kind of weird to me.

Seeing the insane dorms and female beds 8 feet tall always reminds me college is nothing like when I went

At the time, again almost half a century ago, it was perceived as a top off campus living area. It appears it is not anywhere near that now.
No, no it wasn’t

And Fred’s is killing it

I can’t recall it ever being a particularly nice spot. Was a dump even way back in the 90s and was a grade-A shithole by 2010. Complete with many shootings and everything else you can think of. It’s still a big shithole but I don’t hear about as much violent crime these days.

yeah, those were nice apartments and you had some other apartments on that part of Burbank. Though I have wondered if I lived on Chimes or State street areas. Those were also student housing and rented houses. Some great parties on Chimes and State Street.

Didn't the company who owns the magazine send them a cease and desist letter requiring them to do that, after it had been Sports Illustrated for like 20+ years?

Yes, this was in the 90s. It was called Sports Illustrated, but mainly called Sports. The real Sports Illustrate sent a letter demanding they change names since it implied that SI was part of the bar.

It wasn't nice in the 90s, but it was mostly just cheap student housing.
Old apartments from the 60s and 70s, many that hadn't been updated since then. I lived there for 2.5 years or so and never had any problems other than my truck getting broken into. I never once heard a gun shot or anything like that.
I did notice that residents were starting to change so I bailed my last year and moved off of Burbank next to El Cid.

Lived in Tigerland from 2002-2006 when attending LSU. First was in a townhouse in Sharlo, then Cambridge Place I believe off of Alvin Dark and Bob Petit, then a townhouse off of Brightside View. We would walk around at all hours of the night after drinking in Tigerland. Never really felt unsafe until we were robbed at gunpoint shortly after Katrina. It was probably going downhill before that but Katrina tipped the scales.
That Kory's Combo and a flat of Natty for like $7.99 was nice though.
