Pawlowski from Charleston was a big name thrown around too. He ended up flaming out at Auburn a couple years later.

Good point there too. Thanks for the input. All of this is starting to come back to me.

Coming from Smoke to CPM was like hiring Will Wade after Johnny Jones

This.

Most fans knew of Mainieri (though maybe not intricately) and looked at him favorably due to the success he had a Notre Dame, a northern school who was far from a "traditional power" before Mainieri arrived. He was looked at as a breath of fresh air after Skip's hand picked replacement failed to live up to lofty expectations.

This search mirrors the 2016 football search. The state of the program was by no means "bad" at the time the previous long time, and mostly successful HC was pushed out. But a sense of underachievement and apathy had set in. LSU doesn't need a rebuild. Far from it. They just need a reboot.

The 2007 baseball search mirrored the 1990 football HC search. The hand-picked assistant coach turned HC experiment had failed, and the school was looking some "new blood"

Paul was respected at Notre Dame. He had taken Notre Dame to Omaha. An established coach going to an established program. The mood was positive.

The rant was very different back then, but going from Smoke to Paul was very popular.

I was optimistic. After seeing what he did at Notre Dame, we had no reason not to be.

People were cautiously optimistic. He had built Notre Dame from the ground up and had them competing at or around 50 wins a year so everyone was willing to give him a shot.

I hope he makes a good choice but I think he will and should be influenced by others. I just hope he is wise enough to be selective as to who those others are (I think this is probably what you really meant, anyway).

I also hope that in any other hires his circle of influence is tailored to the specific job. That group of influential people needs to be based on their expertise and understanding of the specific position.

College baseball exposure in 2007 vs today is almost completely different. Before the SEC Network you only had a few games a year on tv. And even some of the regionals/Supers were not on television. So the knowledge of an incoming coach was very limited.

LSU fans were spoiled. we'd been having games on tv since at least the mid 90s on Saturday and Sunday afternoons with Lyn Rollins and Ronnie Rantz. Then they'd do the entire regional and then the Super Regional on WB38, whether it was home or away

there wasn't any national coverage until the College World Series

Was everyone excited? Like excited if were to hire McDonnel excited?

My feeling back then was, if he could win at ND, he should have no problems with LSU.

Seemed like a good hire. At the time, felt like a coach that could get Notre Dame to Omaha and had LSU/Louisiana ties would do very well at LSU

I recall thinking about it the same way - and like most others had stated - most of all - getting rid of Smoke. But I remember the overall thought was - someone who could get ND to the CWS def had something to offer.

Positive vibe. Looking back I expected LSU to win a couple of nattys under CPM but it just was not to be. I look forward to the next coach. Never forget, PM won a natty with Smoke, Skip and Les Miles' players.
