Did more with less, less with more. Really believe if Fess Irvin made those free throws aginst Indiana, they go to the NCG. Lsu was better than Syracuse, UNLV, and Providence. Oh yeah, where was the F4?

Man we could be cousins. My Dad flew to Philly to the Final 4 and came home telling us that Dale Brown was just slightly less arrogant than Bobby Knight.

Don't blame the Philly losses on Dale. Blame them on me. I had 3 starters in my room a lot doing things that well, would have been frowned upon, and prevented them from playing. So, they weren't their normal selves.

RIP Cookie Man. Camden was fun wasnt it?

"Didn't even make it to the Sweet 16 with that roster". And did not win the SEC with that roster at a time when the League was down; UK was not a typical UK team in that period, on probation if my memory still works. He was a good man & did a lot of good in the community, but, as noted, he was vindictive as hell. He made Smoke's life miserable & fought with Broadhead continuously. His players loved him, but as LSU's HC, he was viewed more as a clown vs a great coach nation wide.

2nd all time winningest coach in SEC history. Behind only Adolph Rupp, but by all means, re-write history.

I still remember that 1985 Sports Illustrated cover story:

I always thought Dale Brown was a great motivator but a just OK basketball coach. Some of his teams that reached the final four were over achievers because of Dale but some of his teams that had a lot of talent were crap because of Dale Brown too!

You had to take the good with the bad with him. When Pistol Pete left LSU the program was in the tank. Dale took it to height of SEC basketball in 1981. I think he got cocky after that. On one hand he got John Williams from Los Angeles, but then some of his recruiting classes were horrible. He really believed he could win with any scrub team. After Shaq, Roberts and Chris Jackson he made one more recruiting run with Livingston and Henderson. Those teams never panned out, (Livingston’s injury did suck), then the Lester Earl saga really sunk the program.

Well, for all his faults, I’d give anything to have a decade of LSU basketball like Dale produced in the 1980s. No championships, but we were as good as pretty much anyone over that decade.

I was at LSU during the Chris Jackson, Shaq and Dale Brown years. I have so many good memories memories of LSU basketball from that era so it’s hard for me to hate on Coach Brown.

With that said, and without proof, I got the sneaking suspicion that Dale Brown and crew were lobbying the administration to jettison Coach Wade. Wade was on the verge of creating an LSU basketball legacy that would have overshadowed the Dale Brown era. Dale’s ego would not be able to handle that.

Can the OP tell us he’s under 40 without telling us he’s under 40?

Dale Brown IS LSU basketball. LSU basketball has never been as relevant as it was under Dale Brown. Everything that LSU Basketball is today is because of Dale Brown.

THAT is why the court bears his name.

There was a critical game versus Mississippi State i vaguely remember and the cameras were in the coaches box for both teams. During a critical timeout towards the end of the game Dale was giving a rah rah speech and Mississippi State coach was communicating defensive Xs and Os to this team.

Mississippi State won.

It confirmed everyone’s notion at the time; great recruiter, very good motivator but incredibly shitty Xs and Os coach.

I would argue that if the players don’t grasp the X’s and O’s by that point, then they’re screwed to begin with. At that juncture, it’s about motivating them to properly execute the X’s and O’s that they should already know.

He made LSU basketball popular when it wasn’t. Filled the PMAC. They played good teams in the non conference back then like UCLA, LMU, etc. He was more of a motivator and not a coach with any detail. Had talented rosters and got to the 2nd round.

Brady had his ups and downs and it probably was time for him to go.

Will Wade was detail oriented and made LSU basketball fun again. Wish he was still here.

Now, LSU gets SWAC schools to come in instead of big name teams and gets us a low RPI and the PMAC today feels like a funeral home. Maybe this is MacMan’s year. Doubt it though.

Dale did a phenomenal job building up the LSU brand and put us on the map in college basketball. He won SEC championships, NCAA tournament games, but didn’t quite get us that big trophy.

Unfortunately he stayed too long and the program decayed over his last four years. We have never fully recovered although there have been several instances where it appeared we might. Johnson won a title, Brady went to the FF, and Wade won a title.
None of their successes could be substained.

Naming the court after Dale was strictly political. He wasn’t in Skip’s class and Skip set the bar for naming venues.

Yes and no.

Talent wise yes, but the interest in MBB post Pete was through the roof. People wanted more. Influential boosters wanted more.

Plus the AC was still very new. A 15,000 seat modern arena and a show place was something to build on.

Overrated as frick.

Great recruiter, awful coach. Neither him nor Gunter deserve to have the court named after them.

I agree with this argument to some extent. But as as coach, just remind the players of the offensive play and if the defense reacts this way, do this. If the defense reacts that way, do that.

I'm sure the Mississippi State players knew the defense that was going to be called but their coach called it anyway.
