If everything was my call when someone wins the Heisman I would approach it this way. Can also work for other highly decorated players like a Dorsey. No number is retired. Put their number/jersey/name in the Stadium as a Legend. Then put a hold on anyone using that number for 10 years. After 10 years it’s back in circulation. The legendary player is honored differently than other mere greats. No issue with numbers being permanently phased out and lost.
If a player comes in and wants an unavailable number, leave the decision to the Legend or their family. Leinart at USC just did this…he refused to give his number to a freshman that had done nothing and was statistically likely to transfer before playing meaningful snaps.

I would thank JD for his time at LSU and everything he did. Tell him he is always welcome back. Remove his image from Campaus and the QB room, and wish him the best of luck.

That can't work because some young guys are all about their number so give it to them. In NFL some players pay $$ to get the number they want ??

Do absolutely nothing - make no statement and keep the Heisman, he won it at LSU with LSU's staff, players, and facilities. He has his copy and we have ours.

Respect his wishes with the exception of the number and trophy. He is a great tiger, he gave us two good seasons. I will also be grateful for that. He was willing to take LSU money and was willing to represent the university and its fans. So go forth and prosper, but don’t expect the fans to forget who is he is.

A number should only be completely retired when a player is a generational talent and wins a Heisman and national championship,Billy Cannon,Joe Burrow.#5 jersey should be put up in the stands but not completely retired.

I was thinking about this though. Let’s say the Jayden camp doubles down and keeps it up. If Mama stays at the helm, I could see it happening. They send another cease and desist. They demand the Heisman back. I respond that LSU will acknowledge the C&D, will remove all references to him and will not mention him in any way. I’d even send the trophy back. What value is it to us if he doesn’t let us showcase it?
Don't respond in public other than a brief statement that we are no longer referencing him and our promotions are finished until further notice. In turn, JD cannot use any LSU IP in any way. He cannot be in the Heisman House commercials unless he isn’t wearing an LSU jersey. He cannot sell anything with LSU logos, colors, etc.
I’d legit love to see how it plays out. Who’s bigger than who?

Wrong! You promise a recruit a number while he is playing if not already claimed by someone who is more valuable to the team but you don't promise no one will wear it after they leave. You don't want to miss a good recruit over a number if possible.

It really doesn’t matter at this point. JD* is cooked with the fanbase. Even if he’s forgiven, invited back, etc. by LSU, he won’t be comfortable, because the fans will boo him out of the door. To be honest, I’ll probably participate, whereas I do not normally behave in that manner. I contribute a lot to TAF and the program, outside of the fact that my wife and I are alumni, and we have 3 kids at LSU. He was completely out of line, by proxy or otherwise, and he’s made no real attempt to undo it. An unnecessary legal shot at LSU is a shot at LSU fans and alumni. So, I’d like him to stay away.
He can always go back and visit ASU…. Wait, he burned that bridge too. See a trend?
