All he needs to do is hit .240 with productive outs, considering he is a well above average defensive catcher.

If Milazzo can become effective in hitting to the right side (moving runners), or bunting, sac fly, even the occasional it and run...he is 100% the starting catcher. he is too good defensively to take out if he can get to maybe .250.

I am not sure it's the only hole on the roster, though.

Front line starting pitchers is the main hole. Not to say that the freshmen from last year cannot grow and improve, but there is no one that has been in that position just yet. At this point, the starting rotation is a big ? A lot will change in the next 7 months or so. Trust in Jay.

At least Travinski can give you power off the bench.

Not sure Travinski will even play next year due to injury. I just hope he's still on the team and can play to his abilities in 2023.

DH for Milazzo and let the pitcher hit and you would probably get more offense.

I mean he had the worst hitting season from any stater in 30 years. If you can hold out on him you can hold out on anyone

You can deal with 1 shitty hitter in the lineup. Our other 8 hitters should be pretty damn good.

He can improve as a hitter, but even if he doesn't...he's still probably the best option when you look at the big picture.

You know its a little different if its a catcher and there arent alot of other options coming in. Im not saying he should get the starters spot. But there is infinite value in having a strong defensive catcher even off the bench

I’m hoping the Johnson can make Milazzo a .220 hitter. That will be fine with the rest of this lineup.

It’s stupid to say it’s hard to overcome someone batting 100? that shite was proven this year. We absolutely lost to teams because our 9 hole was never on base and our multiple lead off homers, when crews batted lead off , were always solo.

I said it couldn’t be overcome but changed it to really hard to overcome, that’s all I meant.

Maybe I should have said it’s hard or almost impossible to win it all with 7 8 9 all hitting below 200 and millazo was the worst one.
Jj doesn’t seem like a guy that’s willing to put up with that, he will get a transfer if travinski can’t play

Let's give Millazzo a chance with someone who can teach hitting. Plus a friend of mine got a chance to talk to Fontenot for a bit. Said Millazzo was beat up physically. There were times when the guy could barely move but continue to go out there cause he was the only catcher. Got the teams iron man award. So let's see what Johnson can do with him.

Travinski hit for the exact same average as Millazo against SEC pitching, .148. If I remember Projects recruiting thread, he said he had power but struck out a lot.
Why couldn't Smith fix Millazo's obvious deficiency, stepping in the bucket. As per Ben McDonald, when he opens up, he can't hit pitches on the outside of the plate and with the scouting the way it is, everyone knows this and pitches him that way.
By the way, Millazo hit in the mid 400's in his senior year in high school when pitchers weren't as sophisticated as the SEC.

Yeah but travinski didn’t get enough at bats to adjust to the pitching he was facing, millazo got worse through the year.

I mean, wasn’t Eddie smith supposedly a top of the line hitting coach?im sure he knew enough to help milazzo and he just got worse ,and worse ,and then the worst. He did have a double or two,so he wasn’t Hal Hughes ,but it was ugly. Man he’s good behind that plate though.

With our pitching at the moment,we will need to have a guy that’s a backstop behind the plate

if milazzo could hit .200 he could stay in the lineup. Dude is the most lost catcher at the plate batting I’ve ever seen at LSU.

126 at bats
46 strike outs

At some point you start to realize Milazzo is a late-inning defensive substitution and you look for somebody who can function at the plate and behind it for the first seven innings of the game.

Right now I don't think they have that on the roster unless they can convert someone from another position (I've suggested trying Bianco there).

We'll have a transfer in here this summer. That you can bet on. The only way it doesn't happen is if Jensen or Moller slips out of the draft to us.

Yea I mean this is LSU, not a charity team. There’s no one else so he almost has to stay on the team, but otherwise probably wouldn’t be asked back. They’ve done a terrible job recruiting that position

It’s been a joke for 5-6 years now. How we didn’t have a young guy ready when Paps was a JR was unacceptable.

Eta: looking back, I guess Doolittle was supposed to be that guy and I had forgotten about him. Garza was functional, so I guess I’m hammering a bit too much here.

Agreed. I said this in another thread and people acted like I was crazy. I see no chance of him making it to campus. I'd put the odds of seeing him in an LSU uniform lower than anyone else in his class(LSU) and he's obviously not the highest ranked of our signees.

Only hole in the roster? Outside of Crews, Morgan and now Berry we have almost nothing but holes. We have a roster full of player that some aren't very good, most show great potential, but have to be consistent. We had pitchers that looked fantastic one game, then terrible the next. We had hitters that knocked the cover off of mediocre and less pitching, but looked completely helpless against good pitching. Especially freshman, but with good coaching, increased confidence and maturity it's not unusual for a freshman to make a huge leap in their sophomore year
