78-81. Either beating Kentucky to win the SEC or beating Wichita State to make it to the final four.

1979-1981 and not even close. Sweet 16, Elite 8, then Final 4. 2 SEC championships and one tourney champ.

87' is up there .... a few free throws and a phone slamming induced tech from making it to back to back Final Fours.

Indiana got so lucky that game, I think it was Calloway who made the shot in the last seconds to win them the game. Gotta make free throws and close, love Knight but he should've gotten a T for that whether it made a huge difference in the outcome can be argued but still have to close regardless.

Yep. Lost in the first round against Navy in 1985.

It completely ruined the rest of the tournament for me. But then we had the two magical years up next.

Those four seasons the PMAC was rocking, basketball was fun and alive, and the team starters and bench were really talented and a delight to watch.

This guy knows!! LSU basketball, possibly college basketball in general, will top the 1979_1990 era.
You could make a case for about 78-95 perhaps, but these were the absolute golden years for LSU basketball. They had at that time, the SEC game of the week. JP sports. Midweek game. And it was absolutely packed no matter who was playing. We all looked forward to that one night each week.

Still, if LSU basketball became a consistent winner like Alabama and Auburn are today (and weren't at any time before hitting on the right HCs), the PMAC would be just as raucous as it was 30-40 years ago.

That 92 game when we hosted no. 1 Duke has to go down as among the loudest in that building's history, all the fish stories I hear about that game with the chants and all that, too bad we lost that game

John Salley and Mark Price, that Georgia Tech team opened that year ranked no. 1 in the country

top seed, only lost ONE SEC game going into that game (and 3 overall). What people forget is 2 of the 3 prior times we played Kentucky that season, we gave the Cats good games. We knew how to compete with them, just needed to actually close.

I think the Navy lost was when we had Shaq, Chris Jackson, Roberts, like 88 or 89. In 85, I believe we lost to Tulane in the NIT at the PMAC.

And most of those teams were legit great teams with the perspective of history

1979 Sweet 16: Magic's Michigan State team eventual natty
1980 Elite 8: Doctors of Dunk Louisville eventual natty
1981 Final Four: Bobby Knight and Isiah Thomas Indiana eventual natty
1984 First Round: Don Donoher's Dayton squad, went to Elite 8 that year
1985 First Round: lost to Navy with David Robinson, we were a 4-seed, bad
1986 Final Four: lost to eventual champ Louisville
1987 Elite 8: lost to eventual champ Indiana
1988 First Round: were a 9-seed, lost to John Thompson's Georgetown
1989 First Round: lost to Tim Hardaway's UTEP in first round
1990 Second Round: lost to Final Four participant Lethal Weapon 3 Ga Tech
1991 First Round: lost to fledgling power UConn that made Sweet 16
1992 Second Round: lost to a really good Final Four Indiana team
1993 First Round: 11-seed, lost to 6-seed Cal who would upset Duke

Outside of 3-4 of those matchups, we lost to teams that one can't really trash us for losing, breaks of the game

John Brady 2006 squad imo. I know Dale Brown had some good teams but I feel the same we head with Marcus Thornton and Glenn Davis was one of the best basement all teams we’ve ever had in the PMAC

Nope. I don't even have to look it up.

I can remember who knocked us out in every tournament from 1979-1993. It was definitely Navy and Robinson in 1985.

It was an early game, and I remember coming home from school, turning on ESPN and seeing that we had lost. One hundred percent.

That 1981 team has to go down as the greatest LSU bball team of the modern era, before the Indiana Final Four game we only lost 3 games ALL SEASON, if DePaul and UVA didn’t battle for the no. 1 spot all season, we would’ve been no. 1 at one point. What a loaded year.

You're right. I was watching the game in the LSU Student Union in the 2nd half, thinking a diffrent venue than my stadium dorm would give them better luck.

Who did LSU lose to when they had Shaq, Chris J, Stanley, etc? And, when did Tulane beat us in the NIT?

That was the 1990 NCAAT. LSU lost to GA Tech in the round of 32. GT made the Final Four, losing to champion UNLV.

I say it often, those teams were stacked. GT had ACC Player of the Year Dennis Scott and National Freshman of the Year Kenny Anderson. UNLV had everyone, Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, Greg Anthony.

Yeah the Tulane NIT loss was 82 or 83. I know we missed the NCAA in those 2 years.

We also got blown out in the other NIT opener in 82 or 83. I don't remember who we played. UNO maybe?

Dale didn't care about the NIT or SEC tournament for that matter.
