This happened to my team in HS. Our captain was too stupid to understand deferring.

Officials should not have let this happen.

It's not the official's job to make sure guys know the rules, but to make sure they follow them. Or should they stop play to tell a d lineman he is lined up offside, or say hold on, you guys are in an illegal formation, go ahead and reset so you don't get a penalty.

Happened under Saban, if a Miles or Orgeron team had done it the media would still be mentioning it

Bradie James had a brain fart. We lost the toss, and after told of Moo State deferring to 2nd half, Brady James said we will kick off to start the game.

Agree… definitely seemed like it happened during one of the later dwindling Les years.

I don’t personally recall the Saban years incident, but maybe.

Now officials don’t give the option. Whoever has the choice is automatically deemed to receive.

not true

actual rule (3rd option):
"When to decide: The team that wins the coin flip can defer, giving it the right to choose between kicking and receiving the second-half kickoff."

Don't forget they have the choice of which goal to defend. I've heard of a high school coach winning the toss and selected the direction they wanted to go based on the wind. The other team then gets to choose between kicking or receiving. They would also get the first choice to start the 2nd half, so could choose to receive both halfs

I’m aware of the rules, but if you watch games, officials just ask teams to confirm they want the ball when it is their option. Practically speaking, officials try to help players avoid this mistake.

The officials usually confirm with the coach prior to the game/ half time.

My coach in HS deferred in the first half and chose to kick in the second half. We were playing in a monsoon and felt field position was more important and ended up being correct.

One year while I was still an assistant football coach, we lost the opening flip & chose to kick in 2nd half on purpose because the wind was blowing 40+ mph... it worked perfectly as the other team had to pass & kick into the wind in 2nd & 4th quarters... they had fits throwing into the wind in the 4th quarter as they tried to rally to tie & missed 2 short FGs...

ETA
Why would you downvote an actual example of it working?

Your memory how to spell Bradie James isn’t that good.

Incorrect. Your options when you win the toss are:
1) Kick
2) Receive
3) Defer

Brady James, thinking he was putting us in a position to get the ball to start the second half, chose to “kick”. He obviously should have chosen “defer”.

did he chose to kick after the other team deferred? If you chose to kick after winning toss I thought that’s when you chose field and the other team gets ball second half.
