so Chris Jackson and Shaq were on the same team? Holy crap how did ya'll not win the natty?

That was a great team, but they were young and vulnerable to teams that had great perimeter shooters. We had explosive guards, but they were short. We had two seven footers (Shaq and Roberts) that could dominate but also picked up a bunch of fouls. Georgia Tech knocked them out of the tournament with 3-point shooting after we opened up a 22-5 opening lead. Then Jackson and Roberts went pro. What a shame.

Hell we go 10K deep for gymnastic meets.

Thats called a sparse turnout for gymnastics these days. On a balmy Sunday afternoon over 11,000 showed up.

Shaq was behind me and a buddy of mine during registration in the field house. I don't know how it's done now,

Now, it’s done online with a few clicks.

LSU was a basketball school. People threw their penned up football energy behind the basketball team. It wasn't just Shaq either. Chris Jackson was at least as big of a college star and they played together for a year. I was young, but I remember it was crazy.

All that said, they weren't very successful in the NCAA tourney and had multiple disappointments with all that talent.

Baseball was becoming dominant and people were starting to bandwagon that as well.

Jose Vargas - those two guys stirred up a lot of fans

My dad was a manager at the PMAC and was good friends with Vargas. He used to throw big crawfish boils on Manchac Point (opposite side of the river) and told me about how Vargas got really drunk, climbed trees, and disappeared for the night once. If anyone's interested, I can ask if he has more Vargas stories.

There was one year Shaq, Stanley Roberts and Chris Jackson were all on the same team. They should have won it all. Lost in the sweet 16 I think. But that season was crazy.

Basketball games were more exciting than football at the time and there was a buzz outside the PMAC for most every game which i havent seen more than a handful of times in the 25 years since. frick i'm getting old.

The Stromile/Jabari team in '01 had great student support. I remember camping out on the ramp the night before the Kentucky game. It was like a noon tip and tickets were first-come, so there were lots of people out there. We just got a keg before the bars closed, went to the ramp and continued partying all night.

We camped out before big games. And had lines of students trying to get in. But that was during the semester. The Christmas break games against rent a wins were not packed.

the dunk-o-meter (think that’s what it was called) that hung from the scoreboard.

the PA guy saying ... ShaQUIIIIILLLLE O...NEAL!

was watching Chris Jackson

The best college basketball player to ever walk on LSU's campus. Pistol Pete was insane but Chris Jackson imho was better and more clutch.

I was there and I can tell you Shaq was a cool cat and just another student. Him and CJ were in a couple of my classes.

It was different back then. I camped out for the LSU Duke game and I remember it like it was yesterday. One of my buddies was an aid in the PMac and we strung together like 15-20 extension cords to set up a Madden tourney on Sega while we waited for the doors to open in “Tent Land”.

The atmosphere was eclectic and we were the group that started the chant of HOMOSEXUAL to Laetner like the FSU chant.

Nowadays I bet you can’t even come close to doing that.

On another note. Our group was also the reason why there is a protective net around college game day.

We had fun back then. It was the best years of my life and I would have never changed anything and YES that team should have won it all. My favorite player on that team was Vernell Singleton. That guy could jump out of the gym. Major ups.

It was not even close to when Pete Maravich was here. I watched Pete play freshman ball day back in the day when you had to play JV ball if you were a freshman. I used to watch 10000 people leave after the JV game because they had just watched the best player to ever play the game

I was friends with Harvey Williams, Slip Watkins, Carl Dunbar, track guys and many others. I was friends with Hammik's now wife and her sister, and their good friend from Leesville. Campus was cool as I would normally sun tan in the quad in my boxers.

The girls were awesome- from New Orleans and these private schools but they had some great looking girls in 1986-90 from Bunkie, Monroe/Ruston, heck even a bunch of local BR and Lafayette gals. And I went out with a Golden Girl which was OK. Better to be free with all the tail running around

BB and football games were rocking, especially with Hodson, Fuller, Andelsak, Ruffin and crew

Good times then and I am sure campus is fine today. I now run around the world living in Abu Dhabi, Bangkok and Indonesia, but still follow LSU and catch a few games when I return during the season...or catch the bowl games during Christmas back home

Had a manager tell me a story that Shaq and his boys were in Laffy at a club he was a bouncer at (big dude, so I kinda believed him), and It was a Shaq and 2-3 other LSU players vs a squad of 7-8. Said Shaq dropped a couple and was fine but his friends got leveled.
He also claimed Tupac got his chain stolen by a group of fine gentlemen, at a club he was a bouncer at.
So either he saw some cool shite back then or he’s a liar that wanted to sound cool.

He used to shop at Paradise Records. That’s where he met my girlfriend. She asked him what he did and he told her he was a member of the U. S. World Cup soccer team, so she asked for his autograph because her boyfriend (me) played soccer.
