He would walk around campus and hang out in the quad like everyone else. Everyone just treated him like another student when on campus and just left him alone, but he'd say hi to you if you passed him in the halls.

He usually went out with others from the basketball team, so his entire posse was very tall. I would see him in Tigerland during the off season and he even came back to town his first few years in the NBA. Seems like he probably felt more comfortable being around LSU students because they were used to him and treated him like a normal person.

He had an English class in the basement of Allen Hall the class before I did. I was sitting outside the class waiting for it to end before our class. The door opens, a few people file out and then he ducks his head out the doorway. His head clears the doorway but not the pipe over the door and he hits his head. He scrunches his face, rubs his head, looks at me, smiles and says “Owwww.”

He was awesome to watch it in person and the PMAC was full and crazy in those days. It was a lot of fun.

I was still in high school while he was at LSU, but I did attend the Dale Brown basketball camps for his first two years... During the camp lunch break the team would have a practice and gave us a chance to get autographs from all of the players. (I have Jackson's SI cover "He's a Pistol" with Jackson, Shaq, Stanley, Vernell & Williamson's autographs.)

I remember Shaq driving up to the dorms while we were there during the week in his small Chevy Blazer with a ton of speakers with the bass hitting. He was very cool and would tell everyone hello and give high fives.

It was a great few days as a teenage LSU basketball fan.

One year the team that I was a part of for the camp tournament made it to the finals. It was played in the basement gym at the PMAC with all of the other campers lining the court. It is a very small space with a couple hundred kids cheering... It was a very cool experience at the PMAC and Dale always put on a great camp.

There was plenty of free parking and tailgate space...

By the time Shaq arrived , LSU was 10 years into basketball crowd greatness. The Front Row Fanatics were a big deal by 1980. We slept on the ramp. Dale delivered pizza. We harassed Joe B Hall and Christian Laetner.

I had a class with Shaq, CJ, Stanley et all. We saw them out all year and around Broussard and in the quad. Shaq was just a big, happy, goofy kid.

I didn't really care about basket ball that much back then but one day my friends dragged me out to a mid week game. This must have been Shaq's first year. I don't remember the stadium being very full at all. I also remember being able to sit any where I wanted. At the beginning of the season people seemed to actually boo when Shaq came in. That changed before the season was over though.

I don't remember these dynamics at all. In Shaq's first year LSU was pre-season no. 1 in Sporting News. I was in my second year of law school and remember I had a tough time getting in to any game that year (but I could have just been really busy). I went to a lot of BB games the year before (CJ's freshman year), so I'm comparing two years back to back.

I went to the LSU v. Arizona game the next year when Shaq was a sophomore. The crowds were still loud but it wasn't as difficult to get in.

PMAC going crazy when he was at LSU. Looks like it was pretty damn rowdy.

I was there in 80-81 and it was pretty rowdy then (wasn't the PMAC back then, just the LSUAC). Of course the student section was in a much better place then, almost like college basketball was for students of that college to attend. The LSU Kentucky game was so packed that we were sitting 3 students to 2 seats.

Went to the apt a few times when he and Stanley Roberts were roommates. I didn’t know them very well, but Shaq was good friends with one of my buddies. I just remember how genuine he was and how completely hilarious he was. Also it’s hard to believe how skinny he was back then.

Well, there was Greg "cookie monster" Cook and Jose Vargas - those two guys stirred up a lot of fans.

I just remember the rantards saying Dale should be fired because he couldn't do shite with all that talent. 2 future NBA all-stars and a 3rd future NBA player and they did squat.

Shaq was behind me and a buddy of mine during registration in the field house. I don't know how it's done now, but back then, at the end of the process you got your photo ID issued. My buddy was given his ID with his name and personal information on it, but it had Shaq's picture instead of his own. I haven't talked to the guy in years so I don't know if he still has the ID or not. I hope he does.

It was pretty awesome. Not to mention Chris Jackson, Stanley Roberts, Geert, Mo Williamson, Clarence Caesar, Vernel Singleton, etc. Throw in Dale Brown and some amazing players from other SEC teams at that time and it was rocking. Not to mention (actually I am now mentioning it) getting to play Duke with Laettner and Hurley. Those were very good times.

For one midweek home game in '92, I got there really early for some reason. A guy a few rows down from me in the student section went around and asked everyone to only clap politely at every basket until Shaq got a dunk.

It took a decent chunk of time, and it was pretty funny - you could see the players and coaching staff looking over now and then, trying to figure out what was going on. Once Shaq got the dunk, big ol' roar from the student section...

You could actually walk across the quad at night without fearing for your life.

Throw in Vernel Singleton and Maurice Williamson and the "rantards" are justified in my opinion.

But to Dale Brown's credit, he did bring us Johnny Jones.

It was a great place to be at that time for LSU basketball (1989-1992.) Like others said, the student section was rocking and we got to experience some awesome games. These games included wins over UNLV (PMAC), Georgetown (in Superdome), and the Loyola Maramount shootout (PMAC).
