Watch the 8 part documentary "Saturdays down South" on ESPN and you will find out.

You really only need to watch the first two to figure out why it's important to us. At this point, it is ingrained in us but originally it was the only thing southern men had to pride themselves on. We lost the War of Northern Aggression (I kid, the Civil War) and the southern economy was in shambles. The only way we could prove we were better than our neighboring states was to beat them in football. It didn't hurt that football is a violent game that could be compared to war in many ways.

Edit:also Bama cheated in like their 3rd game ever. The year before Auburn beat them so they decided to hire a bunch of players from UNC. So skating the rules to win is also ingrained in them.

In Louisiana football is king. LSU and the Saints are the kings that wear the crowns.

Football is just wondeful, paired with fall weather and sunshine and nothing can beat it.

It's like fast paced chess with violance

I was raised from as young as I can remember to be one. I had no choice but I took to it easily and willingly and loved it and was hooked from the first day I was old enough to have some understanding of it.

For me, I grew up in BR attending U-High. Coming from my hood it was definitely different. My mom worked at the Vet School for years. I remember as a cub scout our troop had a concession booth in the nose bleed section at Tiger Stadium. I was getting like $20 tips just to bring cokes to the fans. Didn't realize I was helping them out with their mixed drinks at the time. I absolutely loved the loud and wild atmosphere seeing so many fans cheer for one common theme, the Tigers. Swore to myself as a child that I would step out of those stands and on to that field as a player. Loved the opportunity to work out with the team from time to time as I got older. Never shed away from my goal to hit that field. Followed my dreams and made them all come true and will forever bleed purple & gold. Met so many people that I'm still Blessed to know today, can call people like Shaq and and so many other great students and athletes just say Whats up man! LSU has always been an integral part of my success. What more could I say??? GEAUX Tigers!

I was born in Mississippi but moved to BR when I was 3. My dad loved football but not LSU necessarily. I went to my first game against Tulane at age 9 and have loved LSU football since. Not just football though...basketball and baseball also. I don't claim Mississippi. BR is my hometown even though I haven't lived in the city since I graduated high school in 1990. I am a student there now after the military and becoming a disabled veteran.
LSU is in my blood. It's something that I can't explain but they are my team and always will be.

I grew up in one of those BR neighborhoods that was built around a golf course. On those cool Saturday nights in the fall, we could ride our bikes around the cart paths and hear people in their carports, sitting in lawn chairs, listening to the game on their radios or watching on tv. You could hear Ferguson’s voice and everybody cheering in unison on big plays. Some people would cook, others just drank and smoked, but those smells were incredible. We’d stop in to listen/watch/eat (or sneak a beer) with everybody we knew. I joined the Boy Scouts just so I could sign up to usher the games and get in for free. As I got older I was able to enjoy the game day experience on campus. I don’t know how to not love LSU football.

As a kid in 1950s Louisiana, LSU was the flagship school that parents and friends rooted for. I jumped right in. No Greenie Weenies for me.

And, being Catholic, we rooted for Notre Dame as well. We also listened to the Green Bay Packers on the radio as often as we could get a broadcast of the game.

What is it that makes LSU football so important to us

I'd say for most of us there's more than one answer to that question. To begin with an individual must have a love for the game itself. But it goes much deeper than just a love for the game. Most of the football players that go to LSU come from Louisiana high schools. They are players that some of us played against in HS or went to school with, or we know their family and went to school with older relatives of theirs, so there is a connection in that. And most of us have a certain pride and love in our state and we see these players as ambassadors representing the character and ethic's of Louisiana. Most of us are hard working people that take pride in our family and the job we do at work. Seeing these kids represent LSU we feel like it's a reflection of who we are, our character, our work ethic, our morals and our beliefs. We want LSU to do well because we want people in other states to know that we are the type people that will not give in to pressure, we don't give up or quit, we will fight until we have not a breath left in our bodies, we will leave flesh and blood, snot and spit and piss and even our soul on the field if that's what it takes to win. We want people to know and understand when they play against us they are in for the fight of their life. And we want our LSU Tigers to represent this on the field just like most of us would.

Well. My dad is a die hard Gaytor fan. And I loved watching the purple and yellow team beat the Gaytors. And I learned as I got older it was LSU. Even tho my dad loves Florida he got me Matt Flynn’s autograph. And many other LSU autographs. And some saints HOFs autographs. But I’m glad he isn’t a tiger fan makes my Saturdays better for a lot of trash talk. Even got me Skip Bertman’s autograph as well. He a real MVP tho.

Memories man.

I remember my dad taking me to games when I was 5-6 years old in the late 90’s and seeing whiskey/Cokes being tossed over our heads onto the field. We still go to every big game together when we can.

Also living out of state the past few years, can’t help but tear up when I go to games and they play Calling BR, Louisiana Saturday Night, and hearing the band play. Just brings back all the memories over the years

......the world is collasping around us. Most likely by this time next year this country will be embroiled in a nasty Civil War. Most every institution in this country (and the world) has been corrupted by crooked politicians and/or morally bankrupt religious leaders.

But LSU football remains constant. Only LSU football has the ability to unite folks......regardless of race, ethnicity, economic and/or social status.

Football Ray......

We are TigerNation.

My father played on the 58 team and I have been going to games since I was 5 years old. Now I fly in for all home SEC games now that I am retired. And get to see my Dad's name on the stadium on a plaque. RIP.

Not even sure how it came to be for me, but that goes for LSU and the Saints.

I grew up in a household with a sister 5 years older than me and my Mother, that's it.

Neither cared about sports, but my Mom said from the time I was 4 or 5 years old, I'd sit and watch every Saints and LSU game while I played with toys. It just kinda happened for me, i didn't have anyone to guide me towards sports, but I went that way.

Born and raised in La......been watching LSU sports since I can remember....attended NSU, but still loved ANYTHING LSU....moved away for military duty..and it was absolutely essential that you ALWAYS rep your home state and college football team (NFL too). With all that said....I'm from the Boot....and I'm proud to say so! I take the good with the bad, but it still will never change my attitude or opinion!

It gives people connection and community. Humans crave those things and as our lives become more and more “virtual” the places that really make us (as humans) feel alive really start to stand out.

The sense of community around LSU football is so strong. There is a reason why even though I live 10 hours away- I want to own a game day house in BR. Renting a house in the “LSU Football community” isn’t enough. I have to own it!
