We didn't have TV so I listened to LSU on radio with my dad during the 1958 season.
Then my aunt got a TV in the 60s and invited me over to watch the one or two LSU games that were broadcast each year.
I lost interest in LSU during the 70s and 80s. Then I met my wife who was raised near Tiger stadium and was totally fanatic.
We have never invited any friends over to watch LSU games because she does not allow distractions during the game.

Lots of alumni in my family. Grew up in Ascension Parish. Went to a ton of football/baseball/basketball games as a kid, and watched/listened to them religiously with the fam if we didn't attend. Went to school there. That's why LSU.

As far as why football? The sport itself is pretty calculated. Someone else ITT alluded to it being like violent chess and it's pretty spot on. Pawns are basically your linemen in chess and there are different formations (referred to as structures in chess). King is basically the QB, protect it at all costs. RB is your queen because of the versatility (can block, rush, or run routes and starts right next to the QB). Knights are tight ends, bishops and rooks are your receivers. Turn by turn attacks.

Also it's hard to get burnt out on football. Baseball and basketball seasons (especially in the pros) have too many games in my opinion to where each individual game doesnt hold as much weight and they play more often in the week so if you miss a game you dont have to wait long for the next chance to see them. With football there's an entire week between games to digest the last game and speculate about the future games and that builds anticipation. And the season is only 4-5 months long and you spend the other half of the year ready for it to start back up again.

Not to mention it represents the entire state we live in.

What's interesting is that even die-hard LSU fans that bleed purple and gold don't let LSU football become the be all and end all of their existence like Bama fans do. So many Bama fans let their entire self-worth become tied up in how well the football team does. When they're winning, people literally wear Bama gear every single day, but God forbid that Bama football loses, they shoot family members, poison trees, set fire to homes, etc.

I've always felt like its Louisiana vs the world. 80% of our players are from the boot and I love to watch them go to war against the best teams in the country in the fall. All we ever hear is death valley is a nightmare to play at because of the environment we (the fans) make it. So that means in some small dumb way shape or form we (the fans) have a impact on the game. Love the tribal feeling of that.

My dad took me to my first game when I was 10 yrs old in 1987. Game ended in a 13-13 tie vs Ohio State. What a war! Been ate up with the purple and gold sickness ever since.

Great question. I can’t really explain it.

Hell, I grew up in an Ole Miss family, but never had much interest in sports until I was older and living in Louisiana. It is just part of a culture that I have grown to love.

There have been moments when I wish I wasn’t so passionate. This football team (in years past) have been bad for my blood pressure.

When I was growing up in the late 50’s/ early 60’s, my now deceased dad and I used to listen to LSU games together every Saturday night on the radio(WWL 870). That’s where I developed my love for LSU football.

There is just something about it. It's like it's in the blood. My dad went to LSU and so I remember games being on with my family when I was little and seeing the excitement they showed around the TV. Hearing the band, seeing the sights in and around Tiger Stadium on a Saturday night, it just seeps into you and becomes part of you. As outsiders have said, there's just something about Tiger Stadium. The same goes for LSU football and my love (and many others) of LSU football. There's a special spirit about it that affects the core of a person.

The state oozes with high school talent that feeds the nation. On a per capita basis we have as many NFL guys from Loozeeana as anyone. The Saints are interwoven into the culture of New Orleans just like LSU is to the state of Louisiana. We some proud sons of bitches!
