I was blessed enough to start with Saban...

He was still a good coach, but he didn't have the players the better teams did.
LSU back then didn't recruit north Louisiana that hard but Mac coached up the guys he had pretty well, I like the story Casanova tells when he was with the Bengals, he said he was talking with Paul Brown and other Bengals coaches about how close they were to a national championship if not for a bad break or two and they all started laughing, he asked what was so funny and the consensus reply was LSU rarely has any big, fast, elite players but Cholly Mac always seems to keep them in the hunt and that's why we keep looking at them, there's some pretty good coaching going on down there

That is a great story, and speaks to the “Fight” in the whole “Fighting Tigers” mantra, and perhaps even the loud and raucous fans on game day. The love for this program is special, and always has been.

Curley Hallman. LSU was exactly 0.500 while I was at school (1992-1996) and we were super excited to go to the Independence Bowl in Shreveport

Paul Dietzel, then barren wasteland until Saban.

and at RB, hometown boy, BRAD DAVIS!
I remember first meeting Charlie Mac at a Hammond High football game - he was sitting directly behind me scouting Brad Davis.

On an electric November night in 1972 against Ole Miss, Brad Davis lands
just inside the left pylon in the southeast corner of Tiger Stadium on the receiving end of a 10-yard Bert Jones touchdown pass as time expired.
Turn back the clock two plays. LSU had driven from its 20 in the final three minutes when with :04 left Jones threw incomplete for Jimmy LeDoux in the end zone. The Rebels started celebrating until they looked up at the scoreboard to see the clock still showed :01 remaining.
Jones to Davis pass just inside the pylon gave LSU the victory 17-16.

arnsparger. i'm sad to say i didn't really follow LSU football until i enrolled..and went to the FIRST GAME
my jaw dropped when i heard pregame for the first time and saw everyone's reaction.
took all of 30 seconds to turn me into a lifelong fan.
