had strong started his head coaching career at UT with 3 straight losing seasons most would have never thought that he was a coach who could win a BCS bowl at Louisville after being fired by UT. Strong was just as much of a failure at UT as O was at ole miss when you consider the programs they took over.

Lol, with Eli Manning at QB? I hope they won a few.
The 2004 rebels won their 4 games by a combined 30 points.
They sucked baaaadd and the cupboard was absolutely bare when Cutcliffe left. That said, O was terrible as the Ole Miss coach, just not "never ever be a head coach ever again" terrible. The Ole Miss debacle is a convenient scapegoat, but perhaps the alcoholism was the real reason he was never given another shot in spite of his post Oxford successes.

Why would SC, who knew him better than anyone, let him walk after the 2013 season?
------------------------------------------------------------
After his interim head coach stint, SC wanted to retain him as an assistant. He was being paid well for an assistant - $650,000 I think- but was too proud or too pissed to go back to his old position.

I think he had quit drinking before he coached Ole Miss.

He was literally the worst coach they ever had. Truly. He went 3-21 in the SEC. That's worse than Hallman's first three years. On top of that, he's never been a coordinator and has zero reputation for tactical prowess. There is no mystery. Again, LSU would not have hired him if they could have gotten their first or second choice.

I think USC was to proud to even consider making him the head coach. There was a lot of the same media and player sentiment to keep him. The job he did a USC was more impressive than LSU, that USC team was a dumpster fire when he took over.

USC fans on their board think the world of him.

Lol. He will fit right in in the sec west, then.

Well, California is a wine and caviar kind of place, and something as simple as O's strong Cajun accent could turn people off?

There are tons of great coaches who imploded in their first gig. Belichik and Carroll come to mind.
Bottom line is not many coaches were going to win with that roster. Aside from Willis, they had absolutely zero talent. He landed top recruiting classes while he was there which laid the foundation for Nutt's early success. I think he takes too much blame for the time he was there and gets too little credit for the foundation he built revealed after he was fired. He also admitted to doing a ton of growing in those years. He tried to recreate USC in Oxford with players like Michael Spurlock at QB. The approach was completely different when he took SC over in 2013 and it showed.

Yes he was not a grown up as head Coach at ole miss

Nor a grown up with Lane at Tennessee

The story took a life of its own, but the confirmed version is that O summoned his team late one evening in the winter, removed his shirt, and told "any motherfricking one of you that thinks he can" to fight him. To the chagrin of countless plaintiffs' attorneys, no one did.

The Vols hosted "Junior Day" last weekend, as more than 100 top prospects visited the Tennessee campus unofficially. What they got, according to several of those players, was a virtuoso, bare-chested performance by several of the Tennessee coaches after they split from their parents.

Long story short, he has a limited skill set
That may be, BUT he did an amazing job after taking over, especially with the offense that was being called by tight ends coach! All of you guys that are judging him on his accent are way off base...I will be happy to hear you eat crow after next season ends.

Navy. Have you had more than one job? I'll bet u have and I'll bet u are better at your skill set now than when u had your early gig-yes?
I don't have any doubt that O is a better coach than he was at OM.
But it's all relative. His opponents are better as well. Just because he's improved as a coach doesn't mean that he's goodenough to be a serious threat to the CFB elites.

It's easy to see why other schools wouldn't want to give him a legit shot as HC. The guy is clearly a square peg. But I think LSU just so happens to be a square hole.

That is the dumbest post of the day and trust me there was some strong competition.
