I would love to see him get drafted by the Saints.

I get that the spring and summer were odd. The timing of his shoulder surgery and then him being so out of shape at the beginning of the year were upsetting, but he did have a legitimate knee injury that kept him out of our last two games and then surgery to repair a broken finger that he had been playing through. I'm not sure what you guys expect from him at this point.

Guys who are injured should not rush back to play in a bowl game. It was the same BS with Fournette last year on this board. If guys who are probably leaving for the NFL are hurt to the point that they're going to miss a good portion of bowl preparation, then why should we have a problem with them sitting out if they're not going to be 100% and risk further injury trying to play through something?

Look, I'm happy for the time the guy has spent here, but my God has a player ever checked out as much as he has in the past year? Takes off spring, summer, fall practice, comes back 3 games into the season and looks terrible, put on a boatload of bad weight. Finally starts to look like his old self midway through our schedule, then doesn't play in the last 2 games this year because of a finger/hand injury?...and now, even though he may be plenty healthy enough to play in the bowl game, might skip that too.

If I'm an NFL franchise I'm not spending a 1st round pick on him, way too much of a risk.

To be fair, he did have surgery on his finger.

I'd love to see him play one more time. But I can't blame him at all if he doesn't. He would have so much to lose and very little to gain.

Great pass rushers are like gold to NFL teams. There is a reason those guys get snatched up quickly in the draft. They're few and far between. Yes, Key definitively checked out to a large degree. But when he was "on" he was every bit the terror he was since he first stepped on the field at LSU. All one has to do is put on the Alabama tape to see how he affected that game.

He may not be a "perfect" prospect. But like QB's, NFL teams are willing to overlook issues if the potential for greatness is there. Key has it and coming back to LSU isn't necessary. In fact, it could ONLY hurt him more than it could help him.

Clowney came into his junior season out of shape with big questions surrounding his motivation. He had a poor junior season relative to his monster soph. season (sound familiar?) Yet, despite all those "issues" he STILL went #1 overall. Key may not go #1 overall, but he's not dropping out of the first round UNLESS he gets seriously injured...which means playing in the bowl game isn't worth it.

0% .... dude seems to have checked out.

First response nailed it. Key mailed in this season. He's still a first rounder, just not the top 10 pick he should've/could've been.

Orgeron has been less than transparent about this, as well...

Is O supposed to call him out to the media? There's a fine line between lighting a fire under someone's arse (saying we don't have a kicker) and throwing someone completely under the bus.

If you think there is ANYWAY he slips past the 7th pick at worst in the draft you are crazy! If you want a recent example of someone who tried less than he did look at Clowney. Not only did he barely play his Junior year, but Spurier came out and called him out right before the draft as lazy and he still was picked #1. He also had WAY less production in college than Key has had playing in the same conference. I'm sorry, you are looking at this with purple and gold glasses and not living in reality. He will probably be a top 5 pick, but he definitely will not slide into the 10-15 range.
I'm not arguing his lack of effort this year, it sucked and we really could've used him. That being said, he will go in the top 10 without a doubt.

And here's the problem. Unfortunately, it seems Key has the same mentality as you. You play for personal pride, you play for your team and you play because LSU gave you a free ficking ride through college to play!

The irony is calling Key selfish because of your OWN selfish desires. You as a fan want to see Key play because it gives your team a better chance to win. But in doing so he should jeopardize an opportunity to earn more money just next season than many fans would make in a lifetime? For what? Just so YOU can be happy LSU won a bowl game?

No one would bat an eye if a third year Engineering major (on full academic scholarship) left school early because he was offered a job paying several million dollars. Why is this situation any different?

I agree with this. Kids a great talent but on the surface has maybe slid into a maturity issue.

If I were a GM for an NFL tea I would think back to Jamarcus Russell.

So, frick it. Why play any of the players? They all should check out according to you. Or is there a certain year they can check out? When is it NOT OK according to you? Football players sign a commitment to play football for a team and in return get a free education....note the word commitment.

I don't know man. It's not how I was raised. Live up to your commitments. Better parents I assume. I'd never leave my teammates hanging.

He just had a knee problem and finger surgery. let him get better and see if he can play or not. Its that simple. I think he comes out and shows up like he did last year's bowl game
