re: What are the odds Key plays in the bowl?

So, frick it. Why play any of the players?
Look. I'm for completely abolishing the bowl system all together and expanding the playoffs a bit. Let's make the postseason actually mean something. Other than the NIT in college basketball, no other sport has a large chunk of their post season consist of essentially meaningless games. Outside of the playoff bowls win or lose the result of the other bowl games is the same. The season ends for both team. The winner doesn't advance closer to a championship...which is the EXACT same result if they lose.
quote:
Football players sign a commitment to play football for a team and in return get a free education....note the word commitment.
And what is the purpose of getting that education? So they can be better prepared to enter the workforce and earn a good living (salary) right? Why does the average non-football player go to college...to eventually get a well paying job, right?
Well, there are businesses (NFL teams) willing to pay millions of dollars to a kid, regardless of if he plays in a bowl game. That being the case, he should risk it all for the good of everyone else (fans/teammates) and the potential detriment of ONLY he and his family? If the player gets seriously injured are the fans and/or his teammates going to pay him the multi-millions he would have made had he not played and just went to the NFL?
So your rationale is that the guy should unnecessarily risk everything just for the benefit of everyone else but him? Because he's taking on all the risk with no actual reward. If he plays and he doesn't get hurt, he's essentially in the same position he was had he not played. But if he plays and he does get seriously injured, he could lose everything that was waiting for him had he simply just chosen not to play.
Maybe it's just me, but I'm never going to tell someone to unnecessarily risk a chance to SIGNIFICANTLY better their life just for my own benefit. That would be a completely selfish move on my part.

He needs to play to sweat out all that spice that was in his system from the summer.

I assume you'd be OK with Key sitting out if we were heading into the playoffs? You know, because of the risk to him. Playing in the playoffs wouldn't benefit him personally according to you.

I'm an NFL franchise I'm not spending a 1st round pick on him, way too much of a risk.

0%... Not going to happen

I certainly wouldn't like it as an LSU fan. But if I'm being honest, yes, I would understand that decision. My being "ok" with it or not is really irrelevant. I don't personally stand to benefit from him playing. But I don't stand to lose anything from him not playing either. He does.
You may not like it (and I certainly understand why), but blame the system, not the kid. He has a potential employer willing to pay him millions of dollars today and I'm sure he would love to get paid those millions of dollars today. Yet, because of the system in place the willing employer can't pay the willing employee until a certain period of time and really the only thing that can keep that transaction from occurring is if the kid unfortunately becomes physically unable to do the job. If both parties could enter into a mutually beneficial relationship today they would, and we wouldn't even be having this conversation. But they can't, and that's why the conversation is relevant.
If winning a college championship is something that is very much important to him, then by all means go for it. Who am I to tell someone what should or should not be important to them? But if earning millions of dollars as an NFL player is more important, who am I to tell him not to take the steps necessary to ensure that happens just so I can be happy my team won a championship?
That's why I think fans bashing a kid for making a "selfish" decision that is in his own best interest is in fact incredibly selfish on the part of the fan.

What does he have to play for?
just dumb.
#1 - Pride / Dignity
#2 - $$$$
#3 - Challenge of going against what is likely the 2nd rated tackle in the 2017/2018 draft.
#4 - His team, coaches, and university
seems like plenty of motivation for me.

He has tons of this coming his way regardless of the citrus bowl.

He has tons of opportunities to go against NFL tackles in his future.

...should all understand if he doesn't want to risk further injury for a win in the 2017 Citrus Bowl.

Key being a top pick is GOOD for LSU. I hope he is top 5 or at minimum top 10.
Posted on 12/13/17 at 12:14 pm to LSUStar
None, even if he is in attendance. He only really played two quarters the entire '17 season. Ain't no way he's coming to "play" in this exhibition match. Just leave him at home...We moved on week 4 so why is it even being discussed.
We do need him to be a top 5 pick tho, for LSU bragging/recruiting rights.

Key has a bad mental battle with himself 24/7 it seems like.
I’m all about life changes to better yourself but it seemed like to me he was just looking for coping mechanisms to fight whatever he was fighting

No way in hell I would draft him if I was a NFL GM.

I can't wait to bump this thread when he's killing it in the NFL.

Something you probably wouldn't understand, heart, character.

Maybe he will, would that make you feel better. Always easy to spot the low character posters. Usually, not always, a direct correlation to success and failure in life.

Too bad he's not killing it in college. That is the reason we recruited him in the first place....to kill in college. Oh well, guess we'll see what could have been once he's in the NFL. Lucky us.
