You serious clark? That cat fielded .899 this year
He chose the absolute best time to play his best during the Regional. His defense was elite the entire regional. So even though he may have a below than ideal fielding %, he sure made some unbelievable plays. And would not be shocked to see him continue to play defense at a high level going into next season and beyond. Some players just take a minute to get adjusted to the college game.

UNC 3rd baseman made an error and went 1-8 against WVU last weekend. Go figure

When UNC is eliminated, poach them too.

The expectation of blind loyalty and four years of labor from teenage athletes in exchange for tuition, a room and three squares a day has been a bizarre fantasy for generations. That's the stupid part.
I mean, it is in fact a university. No one is stopping them from going straight from high school to a professional job.

Nice pick up but he will have to adjust to actual competition.
Their SOS and RPI was arse on a stick. They played a horrible schedule.

It’s actually good overall for the mid majors. They end up getting more good players by not allowing elite teams to load up with talented guys that have to sit the bench for 4 years.

Need their hitters not pitchers!

I wouldn't say it is "bizarre". For most of the existence of college sports the tradeoff of free tuition and expenses in exchange for playing sport was reasonably equal. You could argue that is still the case for several sports like golf, tennis, volleyball, softball, etc.
But starting probably around the 1980's and continuing in sharp upward trajectory, college football and men's basketball (at least at the major conf. level) became more lucrative entertainment business than "scholastic extracurricular activity". That was in the form of mult-million, now billion, media rights deals and huge licensing deals, not the least of which were video games...which proved to be the inflection point for this realization.
The revenue the players were helping to generate for the schools, conferences, NCAA, was massive and the equity of "payment" of tuition/expenses in exchange for generating that huge revenue was becoming less and less...which has led us here.
If you want to truly understand what is happening you have you change your perspective to fit reality. Major college football and basketball programs are no longer "scholastic extracurricular programs". They multi-million dollar entertainment businesses. Look no further than the massive TV contracts the SEC and Big 10 are about to start. Viewed through that prism of reality it makes perfect sense they should be equitably compensated for their role in that business.

The days of a mid-major team making a good run may be over. Blue bloods are going to sweep top talent in the portal every year, and thankfully, LSU may be the greatest beneficiary of it.
It goes both ways bud. Players that don't play @ P5 schools leave and go to mid majors.

No doubt. Yet the university has invested billions of dollars over the generations to do just that--entice young athletes to attend the university and put off a professional career for four years. Because its immensely profitable for the university.
Now the athletes have decided that the scholarship, room and board enticement is not worth the four years. And the university is turning itself into a pretzel to figure out how to save the operation.
This isn't about the athletes. The best of them will get paid regardless of what comes next. This is about how far a university is willing to risk itself to preserve the cottage entertainment industry it created, one that is most certainly NOT part of its mission.
Now would be a really good time to invest in professional minor league football. Golden ground floor opportunity, like buying a stake in an NFL franchise in 1945. (Hint: that's why The Rock is knee deep in XFL/USFL football).

It's not THAT dissimilar to MLB.
Yeah it is. Most MLB teams will not change much from one year to the next. Now in college baseball, between the draft and portal, you will have a ridiculous amount of turnover. Regularly more than 2/3 your lineup and pitching staff will be different from year to year. That absolutely was not the case five years ago.

Did you actually read the post before firing off an emotional response?
I said it's not that dissimilar in the aspect that "big market" teams routinely take stars from "small market" teams because big market teams have more revenue. LSU is a "big market" team. But then I also said....
quote:
But at least in MLB the small market team gets a few years of service from a guy before he moves on. In college, the small market team is lucky to get two seasons. It is what it is though and likely not changing anytime soon. So while there will always be a few "small schools" that compete each year, sustaining it will be tough. It sounds condescending, but, in essence, a school like Wofford is a AA or AAA farm system for the LSU's of the world.

I really hate to see mid major teams get ravaged every year.
