I’ll add an anecdote: My girlfriend got recruited by a number of D1 schools for dance and she lights up anytime the Tiger Girls are mentioned. She had never heard of he Golden Girls until I showed them to her at the Miami game. The Tiger Girls have a great reputation.

All you have are negative posts towards our current band and staff. I do notice the number of tubas are down but I'll bet that's a quality not quantity issue.

I watched the band practice at Coppell HS for about and hour and a half. As a retired principal and coach who was over fine arts at my school, I appreciated the way the directors handled the band. Everything I witnessed was positive... all critiques of mistakes were positive.

I like the direction that the band is going and I would hire any of the current directors if I was still a principal in a heartbeat.

The band director that I hired as a principal is now an assistant director of the Purdue University Marching Band, so I think I have a good idea of what a good band director/teacher should be like.

I completely understand. This is (in part) because of the current LSU Band administration and their decision not to feature the Golden Girls at halftime. This is a terrible way to treat a group that has been around since 1959.

I'd like to see something other than spelling out words in the future, but please no more shows using Mike and the video boards.

The bottom line is that while the musical quality of Tiger Band may not be diminished, there's no way that you can deny that the reduction in size has negatively affected their overall presence in the stadium.

Also, I don't have a problem with the sassy male colorguard member, but at least get him a uniform that better matches the rest of the band. The purple t-shirt and black warm up pants make him look like they pulled him out of the crowd.

Can anyone properly explain why the band is having a problem with numbers? Why is it a problem now?

They’ve been declining in numbers since Roy King was let go and Tiger Band was moved out from under the athletic department over to the School of Music. Many feel this was nothing but a cash grab, so that the folks at the School of Music could get their hands on money that’s traditionally been earmarked for Tiger Band stipends (specifically stipends for the Golden Girls and color guard).

That’s the story I heard.

The School of Music stole the scholarships that had for decades belonged to the colorguard and golden girls.

What years were you in Tiger Band?

late 80's.
Missed you by a few years; was in the Drumline with Roy (Late 70's/Early 80's) and the first year we made the transition to Corps Style in 78.

I was the "Pre-Game" Bass Drummer. Marched Madison just one season. Missed Prosperie and Moorhouse by one year.

Tiger Band is too small now for a 102,000 seat stadium; needs to be 50-100 member "Brass Heavier" to fill up Tiger Stadium.

The band only has one purpose and that's to entertain the Tiger Stadium crowd. Half-Time shows have to be interesting enough to make them want to stay in their seats and watch the show. That's not happening currently.

The M-F practice time should be increased to produce more evolved and substantial shows. I've always been an advocate of 2-3 hour M-F practices and NO Saturday practice. The Saturday practice just wipes you out and zaps your energy before the game. If you don't know what you're doing by the end of Friday practice, it's too late to cram it in Saturday.

Not a fan either of the current Admin set-up with the Head "Director of Bands" not being the head Tiger Band Director. Do you know if the "School of Music" has 100% full control of Tiger Band now or is split between them and the Athletic Department?

The Golden Girls have gotten not as hot as they used to be... to be nice.

Agreed. I watched them go from supermodel hot to girl-next-door hot over the last 10 years.

90/91 here
Season after the great purge of the 89/90 drunken group
Linda’s drill was tired and rehashed for years
Frank was demanding but pretty aloof most of the time
We had great musicianship and took pride in our performance
Linda was the driving force behind the discipline in the organization
I remember Saturday run through was pretty tiring, Saturday home game was a long day
The guy that said more woodwinds equals more sound is dumb, brass and drums is what the crowd hears

The Tiger Girls now have more girls show up at their auditions than the Golden Girls...it was common to have over 100 girls at tryouts. She told me this year had around 45 at tryouts!
The Golden Girls are possibly on a downward spiral...Last year, not a single halftime show featured the Golden Girls!

That stinks. Both groups are good for LSU fans - the Golden Girls have a lot of historical significance - even my 17 year old daughter looks forward to seeing them come down the hill with the band.

The Tiger Girls are more of what younger people want to see today - it is what it is, and they are talented.

The world changes. Buckle up, it's not done yet.

there is no feeling about it. It was 100% a cash grab. The POS administration in the school of music just got all pissy because Tigerband got all the money and attention while they felt like they deserved it. So now they have all the control and as you would expect Tiger band has suffered in the process. What a bunch of bitches

Most of this can be laid at the feet of Bobby Jindal. His utter contempt for public/higher education and the ensuing funding cuts had departments eating their own. The most high profile example of this is the music department at LSU.

Also, the refusal of the “good ole boys” to make Linda Moorhouse Tiger Band Director and Director of Bands played a major role in the decline of Tiger Band. It was a job for which she was immensely qualified, and which she completely deserved.

I blame Jindal’s appointment of F. King Alexander. Don’t forget, the cash grab by the School of Music as facilitated by the railroading of Roy King was sanctioned by him.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that Tiger Band is now totally under the control of the School of Music.

F*King brought in his buddy Todd Queen as the new dean of the school of music. Supposedly, Mr. Queen did the exact same thing at his previous university (Colorado State I think), which pretty much ruined their marching band.
