First of all, I am not Richard, but I think I do know who you think I am.

quote:

Their scholarship letters clearly outlined these choices. If you can't live up to the requirements of the letter, decline the scholarship. Nothing wrong with scholarship money being dispersed among all three concert ensembles (to secure proper instrumentation). That's called dispersing scholarship $ for the big picture and in the best interest of the entire band department.

Therein lies the problem: "That's called dispersing scholarship $ for the big picture and in the best interest of the entire band department."

Since he was not the Director of Bands, Roy is not the person charged with determining the best interest of the band department. He was, however, withholding scholarship money from people unless they gave up their earned chair in Wind Ensemble and played in Symphonic Band instead. That's probably what got everybody mad at him in the first place.

As to what Wickes did, I won't dispute your account. But, again, King was not the Director of Bands, so he had less power than Wickes over that.

Beyond that, the rest is interpretation, and there really isn't any point to go farther. One thing is certain, we both want Tiger Band to be the best band it can be.

Hope you have a great day.

I will add this.

Whether it was $50,000 or $500,000, I do think it was rather petty for the SoM to act against Roy the way they did in prohibiting him from traveling to Syracuse to negotiate the deal. So, on that point we totally agree.

Can you expound on why our numbers are down?

I remember a few years ago there was supposedly a safety issue with having both TGBFTL and the visiting band on the sidelines before halftime and there was supposed to be a policy to prohibit the visiting band from marching. I know nothing specific but I wonder if part of the rational of downsizing the band could be this supposed safety issue?

Just a random thought...

That policy was in place for a very short time. Visiting bands are now able to perform in Tiger Stadium again. As far as reducing the number of Tiger Band members as a safety precaution, that makes absolutely no sense to me. I don't think that safety has anything to do with it.

That was the line from the Athletic Department, but I'm not buying it. What I think happened is that Alleva wanted to stop sending the whole band to away games. To do this, he came up with this line to prohibit other bands from playing in Tiger Stadium. (ETA: he now lets other bands perform because he got totally called out for his BS.)

I doubt that would change the desired numbers or how new members are recruited.

JMHO.

that safety rule was total bullshite made up to try and phase out marching bands. Both bands had been on the field together forever

I agree. Alleva was looking for a way to justify not sending the full band to the ONLY regular season road trip they go on. He knew that by prohibiting opposing bands from performing in Tiger Stadium, other schools would reciprocate by banning the full Tiger Band from their stadiums.

100% Correct!!!
JA presented a motion at the SEC Director's meeting to eliminate visiting bands from performing (all of the SEC). He lost the vote because of Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee. He wanted to NOT send the full band anywhere and blame it on the SEC. Then he (and his associate AD's) came up with this lame excuse about sideline safety. His plan: if we can "prevent bands from performing at LSU, maybe they will reciprocate, thus the reason to only travel with a pep band.
Hey Joe.....just do whatever you want and then stand up and defend it.

I imagine that other SEC ADs have very little respect for Alleva, but this was a pretty shameful act on his part. Next season there is no neutral site game, so I wonder what the full band trip will be. I'd put my money on Moo State or Ole Miss, since they can travel by bus to either campus.

I think there will be no regular season full band trip, just like 2016.

It’s incredible where they’re pinching pennies. We’re LSU for gods sake. If you just keep cheapening the product then what’s the point. It’s supposed to be fun. Marching bands are fun.

Just remember.....One of the first things the new LSU band director said when he was hired was, "the LSU band is UNDERWORKED and OVERPAID."
This is not the kind of attitude that respects the students and their work ethic.

I sincerely hope that's not the case. Every other SEC school takes their full band to at least one away game. Several schools bring their full bands to multiple road games. We can't afford to send Tiger Band on a freaking bus to Mississippi or Alabama?

Forget Alabama......LSU will not pay for the tickets/seats because of the cost. Maybe Miss State (about the cheapest in the SEC other than Vandy & Mizzo). My guess is they will opt for a pep band and count on a bowl game as the full band trip as they did a couple of years ago.

No. Tiger Girls are part of the Cheerleader area. Golden Girls are part of the band.

Put one Tiger girl and one Golden girl in Mikes trailer before the game and let them fight it out while being towed around the stadium. Gotta keep that trailer moving or the bearings will go bad. Keep a running score and at the end of the season the victor claims the spoils.

Huffington Post Top 10 in the country, Rated as the top band in the SEC BY THE BAND DIRECTORS IN THE SEC, Sudler Award, etc.
Once again....what has the current regime received?
seriously? you are trying to gauge college bands (first of all, stupid) by "awards" (also stupid). that proves you aren't a music professional, at least not a good one.

quote:

then YOU don't know anything about drill design.
i worked in the business for 20 years. i marched drum and bugle corps. i taught drill. all you have to do is watch the videos. i'm referring to the gimmicks. in regards to the gimmicks, they are identical. good grief

quote:

how did LSU receive the Sudler
because the award is silly and if you worked in the business, you would know that. AGAIN, i'm not saying tiger band is not the best. they are. but the award is silly. stop using it as some kind of barometer. it makes you look stupid

quote:

"homer" for the current regime
i have already said i don't know the current staff and couldn't care less. all i know is they are putting an entertaining product on the field that sounds great.

quote:

Also, what has Dennis ever done? What has Damon ever done?
create entertaining shows and maintain a great sound. what is your problem?

quote:

These two are clueless
says who?

quote:

they don't even realize how bad it is
what is "bad"?

quote:

The current band situation is MUCH different.
i asked anyone to prove this is beyond the control of the directors. no one has

quote:

What SEC band is paying more
i didn't say more. i said caught up. can you make even one post without misrepresenting what i'm saying?

quote:

RECRUIT HARDER
prove they aren't recruiting hard enough

quote:

the Damon/Dennis shite show
tell me what you think is so bad, in your "expert" opinion. i know band directors who like them and think they are doing a good job. perhaps you're the exception. ever thought about that?

why are you acting like i hate frank/linda and love damon/dennis? frank and linda did an ok job. yeah, they were lazy. so what. damon and dennis might not be the best ever but they are also getting the job done. it's freaking college marching band. it's not dci. it's not winter guard. hell, it's not even lousiana showcase. it's just for fun.
