Don't know since this media sharing just started at LSU WBB. Corporate sponsorship is big at LSU, the more successful the team is, the more tv time they will get, the more corporate sponsorships. Guess we will have to wait a year or two to see how all of this works out for WBB.

Congratulations you might’ve just posted something correct for the first time in your tigerdroppings history.

I’ve never understood why they have so much staff/admin for women’s basketball. They have a good bit more than the men’s basketball team or they did a year ago.
Not bashing either just curious if someone actually knows why?

SpartanSoul, this was the mic drop moment that should end this thread.............

quote:

TIGER RAG: How do you justify losing approximately $8 million a year with women’s basketball?

AUSBERRY: You justify that because of what coach Kim Mulkey ($3.35 million a year salary) brings to LSU. The deficit for every major women’s basketball program in the country is about the same as that. South Carolina, all of them. South Carolina might be higher than ours. When you look at it, it’s one of the top sports. Title IX consequences on that, too. What Kim Mulkey brings to the table for us, we can’t buy. It’s priceless. Baseball doesn’t make a lot of money either. Jay is the highest paid college baseball coach in the country ($3.05 million a year), which is deserving. He’s not much in the black, or he’s right under, which is still a win. Because some baseball programs probably lose $5 or $6 million. What he does for LSU and its brand is very important. LSU baseball loses money because of his salary, because it’s so high. But it makes itself up, and we get close to it. So, that’s a win, because other baseball programs lose a few million a year. You’ve got to look at it as how close you are to that bottom line. So, if we didn’t have Kim Mulkey, we’d probably lose $11 million in women’s basketball.

TIGER RAG: What do you mean by that?

AUSBERRY: That’s season ticket sales. Kim fills the building. So bottom line, if she’s not there and you’re doing the same thing she’s doing exactly, that deficit number goes up. Same thing if we didn’t have Jay Johnson winning championships in baseball, that deficit number would go up. At least, Kim Mulkey fills that building. At least, all those corporate dollars are working, which we’re trying to calculate now in a study. How many times do you see our brand out there? Wherever Kim Mulkey goes or wherever LSU goes, that brand is so strong. So I’m talking to corporations, and that’s what they’re telling me. ‘We want to be part of LSU right now. Your brand is the strongest.” Even people who have given other schools around the country a lot of money, those corporations are saying, “Hey, we want a piece of LSU.” We’re one of the top three brands in the country. Kim Mulkey is part of that. Jay Johnson is part of that. Lane Kiffin is part of that. Our brand is so strong. That’s where the winning is taking place. Those are the people that people are attracted to.

Understood, I think the big picture thought for me is the hand wringing over Kim's salary and the thought that if she made half of that it would help whatever sport each of us value the most is really a bit ridiculous.

If for a moment there was a thought that this was so they would get the money from other sources to pay Kim. We would form a NIL PAC or whatever you want to call it that works for women's basketball and they would set up a funding mechanism to pay Kim - something like that.

Paying Kim is not stopping us from doing anything....and if anything she's earned it. Those extra 7,000 fans at games for each game were not there before Kim got here. And they buy tickets, merchandise and concessions.

That doesn’t mean that it’s right, or that people can’t complain about it

If women’s basketball was the corporate draw that they are acting like it is, the tv deal would be much better and they wouldn’t be running at an 8 million dollar deficit.

Mulkey definitely likes to spend the money ! Over staffed for sure. I think each Team needs to pull their own weight to a certain extent. Outspending a Teams revenue by 7-8 M is not good.

I absolutely think the ticket price should go up considerably for sec series games. If you want a $15 ticket you can buy one for midweek or out of conference. Sec series should cost minimum $45 each face value in the outfield. Increasing from there based on location. For all 15 sec home games.

So Verge says Mulkey is priceless, then proceeds to put about a $3mil valuation on her.

She probably generates a revenue above and beyond an average replacement, but his statement that “filling the building” is the difference between an $8mil deficit and an $11mil deficit is ridiculous.

A 50% reduction in ticket sales wouldn’t equal $3mil lost.

You have to read the whole article(which few posters here have the attention span to do).

He talks about the overall support and spotlight she and others bring the University. It is not just about $$$, but they do in fact bring in huge dollars from corporations etc. Some of those corporations have shifted money to LSU even when they were giving to other schools because of the star power the LSU brand now has. Just like spending huge money on Lane and football will bring a return on the investment. Then you add on the halo effect and the intangible benefits.

College sports don't exist to make money, football provides for 19 other sports. It's been like that since the beginning of college sports. What hole did come out of?

Bro, just stop. So, you know better than the current AD AND the previous one? The argument is over, and the premise of the OP is silly. Just enjoy the fact LSU wants to be good in all their sports. Nobody cares what kind of "deficit" some of you think they're running. Clearly the athletic department does not consider it so. So, just let it go. Life will be much happier for you when you do.
