Duke LAX WAS second only to Basketball. They were a bread and butter sport.

He was as poor an AD with public relations and the media as I've ever seen. Press conferences and interviews always seemed cringeworthy to me.

The coach resigned

Yeah he "resigned".

quote:

Mike Pressler: I was actually advised early on to distance myself from them and at that time, I-- that was, like, blasphemy. You-- you're tellin' me that? We don't run. We don't quit, you know. That's not how we're made. You finish. You sign on, you finish what you start at all costs, you know. That's it. You finish it.

Armen Keteyian: The word that comes up time and time and time again with you is loyalty. Why is that word so important to you?

Mike Pressler: It's everything. It's - it's everything. And without that, as a man, you have nothing.

With the rape scandal at full boil here at Duke, Pressler was summoned to the office of then-athletic director Joe Alleva, where he was issued an ultimatum: resign immediately or risk being fired. So Pressler resigned, the sacrificial lamb needed to appease protestors and protect the school's gold-plated image.

Oh and the district attorney ended up getting disbarred:

quote:

During the ethics trial, Nifong acknowledged he knew there was no DNA evidence connecting Reade Seligmann and Collin Finnerty to the 28-year-old accuser when he indicted them on charges of rape, sexual offense and kidnapping. Nifong later charged Dave Evans with the same crimes. But months later, state prosecutors concluded the three players were "innocent" — a fact Williamson hammered home on Saturday.

"We acknowledge the actual innocence of the defendants, and there's nothing here that has done anything but support that assertion," Williamson said.

Williamson said it appeared that throughout his investigation, Nifong was looking for any evidence to link a lacrosse player to the accuser's story in order to support his initial comments that he was sure an attack occurred.

"He's already out there," Williamson said. "He's way out there by then. He looks foolish if he does not go forward."

One of the most serious ethics violations Nifong was found to have committed involved his failure to turn over DNA test results that identified genetic material from several men — but no members of the lacrosse team — in the accuser's underwear and body.

Alleva never should have been hired. Wish I knew who was ultimately responsible for getting him to LSU.

While Alleva does deserve some blame for the Duke Lacrosse thing most of it was done above his head. Which is actually one of the problems with him as an AD. He was basically a yes man for the President at LSU too.

The media also deserves a significant amount of blame, they stoked the outrage with few repercussions. It took a small paper in the area to discover this was a hoax and even after it was confirmed a hoax the New York Times continued to treat the athletes like they were guilty.

When I read that Alleva was being considered I was appalled, the guy that threw his coach and team under the bus, coming to LSU, no way,

And don't give me the BS that these decisions we made over his head, that's like the little Nazis saying "I was only following orders".

How did ge get hired at LSU?

This is one of two great question in LSU lore. The other one being what the hell happened at halftime during the 1/9/12 debacle?

I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree. I don’t believe anybody, ever, should be penalized without due process.

I 100% agree with you about due process, however the other poster is right, the Duke Lax mess was not really on Aleva, it was in the DA and the media frankly, doesn’t the 30 for 30 start with the woman columnist that all but hung those guys immediately after offering a mealy mouth half assed apology? In that atmosphere not taking any action was not realistic. Though I would not have hired him after that and never liked the hire

but nobody forced Alleva to cancel mens Lacrosse and fire the coach without due process.

It is very likely the school president did exactly that. No story is getting that big and the school just lets the AD have final say.

One of the lacrosse players charged was actually across town at an ATM machine when, according to DA, he was in involved in the supposed rape. There was a video recorded by the bank with the time and date of the player at the ATM completely proving innocence. The DA withheld this evidence from the player’s lawyer, which is illegal. Ultimately the truth came out, but not before the young man went through hell because of this corrupt DA.

Alleva was still indirectly tainted and his resume already wasn’t exactly stellar. I still have no idea how he was considered much less got it.

90s LSU I would get, but not the AD he inherited

Alleva actually said later that he was absolutely shocked LSU hired him and thought he had no chance. That's how poor a hire he was.

That’s not true at all. The coach resigned and the president cancelled the season.

Again, Alleva sucks, but he was way down the list of people who fricked that up

He was literally given an ultimatum to resign or be fired by Alleva.

He has spoken about it.

quote:

And Pressler? Besmirched by all of it and forced to quit by then-Duke athletic director Joe Alleva. Pressler told “60 Minutes’’ that prior to landing the Bryant gig, one school was so reluctant to have him on campus to talk about a coaching opportunity that it requested the job interview take place at a highway rest area in Lynchburg, Va. Ah, the bravado of academia.

That coach had a nice career ahead of him. I cannot stand Joe Alleva.

quote:

Pressler was painted as an aloof, if not enabling, leader whose undisciplined team had already had recurrent run-ins with the law.

quote:

He was fired in 2006 in the wake of allegations of rape against three athletes in the program that proved to be baseless. Pressler's firing was publicly portrayed by Duke as a resignation, which gave rise to the implication that the coach resigned due to the students' presumed guilt.[citation needed] Pressler believed the players were innocent and had argued that the lacrosse season should not be canceled until the DNA test results were returned.[8] Pressler has written (with co-author Don Yaeger) a book giving his view of the incident, It's Not About the Truth: The Untold Story of the Duke Lacrosse Rape Case and the Lives It Shattered.

quote:

Pressler demanded compensation from Duke for wrongful termination. In early June 2007, Pressler and Duke agreed upon a financial settlement for an undisclosed amount.

quote:

Then in October 2007, Pressler filed suit against Duke, alleging the university broke the terms of the confidential settlement. Pressler asserted that Duke broke the terms of the settlement when he was slandered by Duke senior vice president John Burness, who made disparaging comments about him, saying the difference between Pressler and the current lacrosse coach was "night and day." The suit sought to void the settlement and to pursue damages in a trial rather than by arbitration, as specified in his contract.[11]

The trial judge ruled for Pressler's claims, and was upheld by the Court of Appeals on September 1, 2009. Pressler's obligation to submit his claims to arbitration was voided by the June settlement. Pressler was free to proceed with his suit, including discovery.[12] On March 31, 2010, the final day before discovery would start, Duke settled with Pressler. Although terms of the settlement were not disclosed, Duke issued an apology.[13]

Apr 12, 2015 — Former Duke lacrosse coach discusses his forced resignation during the 2006 Duke rape scandal and his hard road back to coaching.

READ

quote:

Then on April 5, Pressler says, Duke athletic director Joe Alleva called him in and said, "Mike, I've got to let you go." Which was amazing to hear, because only a few months earlier Alleva had given Pressler, the 2005 NCAA Coach of the Year, a rich three-year contract extension.

"But, Joe," Pressler pleaded. "You stood up before my players and said you believed it never happened. The DNA is coming back any day. Wait for the truth."

"It's not about the truth anymore," Pressler says Alleva told him. "It's about the faculty, the NAACP and the special interest groups." (Alleva did not respond to SI's calls.) So after a 153--82 record and a 100% graduation rate in 16 years, Mike Pressler was canned.

This is what pissed me off the most. He couldn't just wait. He caved.

no one should ever forget that he spent 24 hours in jail for what he did, and if he’d been successful, each one of those boys would’ve done 15-25 minimum. the fact that he’s still alive is a travesty

To me that kind of thinking is why due process is hardly a thing anymore and why accusations have basically become convictions. It strengthens cancel culture and the corrupt people behind it.
