That is a novel. To say USC has zero legit titles since Jimmy Carter is an exaggeration. 2004 they were the clear cut number 1 team. Would I have rather Auburn played USC then OU? Yes, but they still smoked OU in the Title game and both were 1 and 2 the whole year so it was very difficult for Auburn to jump OU.

Can't believe I just defended USC here but that is how extreme your post is. Their '03 Title claim is irrelevant to their '04 BCS Title. We won the Title in '03 and they won it in '04. Simple as that.

why in the world would you feel compelled to research and write all of that? What a massive waste of time and energy.

Look, we're playing USC on Sunday. We'll either win or lose. I don't care one iota about any of the rest.

Sure there is. We can continue to remind everyone, including the same 5 “intellectuals” with your technicalities that only LSU won the only title game that year. Historical fact.

You can remind people of that all you want, but the historical fact is that the title game they played was not an official NCAA sanctioned championship. Its legitimacy comes only from public acceptance, which they borrowed from the Coaches’ Poll contractually tied to the game winner. That Coaches’ Poll championship had no greater public acceptance than the AP poll championship granted to USC. LSU fans can rant about it all you want, it doesn’t change the reality that most college football fans acknowledge both LSU and USC as legitimate champions in 2003.

championship had no greater public acceptance

If you followed the sport during the BCS era you would know that the branding and marketing of the BCS title game was given more emphasis over the other bowl games. The public watched the bowl selection show to see who would play in the title game. There’s a reason USC and the media were upset that night. They didn’t make the title game… and you need to be reminded that in real life, especially competitive football, you play title games to win titles. College football in 2003 had a title game and it was the goal of every team to participate in it.

Again… only one team won the title game. Whitworth said it best. They are paper champions.

That’s the thing. They DIDN’T have an official title game. They had a bowl system that tried to arrange the matchups in such a way that there was broad public acceptance that the two participants in the game they designated as the BCS title game were the two best teams so that the winner of the game would be perceived as the champion. Its legitimacy still relied upon that public perception and acceptance. 2003 simply exposed the limitations and flaws of the attempt by the bowl system to prevent the implementation of a true playoff system.

The Coaches sent in their votes between the game ending and the trophy presentation?!?

NCAA still recognizes their National Championship on their website. By any measure they are and were the ‘04 National Champion.

#1 was already preselected for the voters based upon the outcome of the game. That trophy is the same trophy the Coaches’ Poll began presenting in 1986 before the BCS and continues to present today post-BCS.

Friend,

The argument for USC having a legitimate claim to the 2003 national title is as thin as an AP voter’s ballot. When it comes to the better season and the winner of the National Championship Game, there is but one team who can claim the title with legitimacy.

Even USC fans know where the National Championship Game was hosted. They desperately wanted to Sugar Bowl, and when they were left out of the title game, they decided the Rose would be their makeup bowl.

Yours,
TulaneLSU
